Random Honda Pilot question - Muffler

We seem to have a different muffler than any other Pilot out there, first the background:

We bought a Honda Pilot EX-L (2WD) last year, and after about 300 miles has this horribly annoying loud hum noise come from what seemed to be the back of the car. Seemed to only happen at Specific RPM's. Brought it to the dealer, and they replaced the muffler. They noted the sound was still there, so then diagnosed it was the subwoofer. They disconnected it (they had none on hand at the time), and they noted the sound was gone. So as I was driving home, I heard the noise not even 100 yards from the dealer. I pulled into a shopping center and called the guy right back. He was surprised the noise was still there. Long story short, on another stay at the dealership, they ended up replacing something called the active noise control system as well as a few other things I don't recall.

Shortly after, I noticed on every single Honda Pilot on the road, the muffler has two exhaust pipes coming out of it. Our newly replaced muffler has just one pipe. Why the difference? Does it matter? I'd hate to think they replaced a perfectly good muffler with a lower quality one.

It seems you are still under warranty. There is no reason to substitute the designated part with a different one, unless recommended by a technical bulletin which the dealership should make available to you, if that's the case.
Sounds a bit fishy to me. You can call customer service at Honda and demand a full explanation and/or review of the repair performed.

I wouldn't worry about it, but I'd never won a Honda Pilot either.

don't know anything about the muffler, though I wouldn't worry. Most likely the only difference is the last 12" where you have a single tip vs a dual tip. The rest of the exhaust is probably the same. The dual tip is more prettier though. LOL!

As for the noise canceling, that has to do with the way the new engines work. I'm assuming you have the new V6 since that's the engine that has the noise canceling. The new V6 has variable cylinder management that regulates between 6, 4, and 3 active cylinders. When you don't need the power of the 6, the rest can shut down and boost gas mileage. Problem is that the 4 and 3 cylinder modes result in more noise from the engine. So they use active noise canceling. The sound system actively monitors the engine noise and then outputs a sound signal that is 180 degrees out of phase from the noise it hears. That cancels out the engine noise and reasults in a quiter engine and interior. But when it goes wrong, well apparently you get a nasty hum from the subs....
