Connecting PC to HD TV

apologies for simple questions but am new to all this!

i've just got a full HD PC monitor and I'm just about to buy a new PC with a good HD graphics card

the PC has a DVI output (not HDMI)

if i connect the PC to the monitor using a DVi to HDMI connector/lead and play my HD (AVCHD) video, will I get a HD image on the PC?

i.e will a AVI to HDMI lead allow full HD to be viewed on the monitor?

thanks

David

Welcome to HDF!

Yes a DVI to HDMI cable can be used. Then you use a stereo audio cable for the sound between the headphone jack on the PC and the audio inputs that are paired with the HDMI input on the TV. Some TVs will have multiple HDMI inputs and some of them will not have audio inputs, so you will want to pick one that has the audio inputs.

Some HDTVs will have overscan on their HDMI inputs, so if your HDTV (you didn't tell us what it is) has a PC input, it may be a better choice.

Sony and Toshiba LCD TV has audio input for HDMI 1 that I encountered with.

If you buy ATI graphic card...recent series, the card does have 5.1 audio. You have to use/buy special DVI->HDMI adapter..then just use HDMI cable that will carry sound and video to your TV.

Some of the ATI cards include regular DVI->HDMI adapter that only carry video.
