FX 5200 DVI > HDMI Converter. hdtv NOT detected!!

Hi everyone,

I'm stumped in getting this to work for a while now. I would really be grateful if gurus here can help me out.

Scenario
I have a HDTV, with an HDMI cable that I need to connect to my PC.
My PC uses FX 5200, and there's a DVI out.

I used a DVI > HDMI converter and connected my PC to my HDTV.
However, Windows/FX5200 is NOT detecting my HDTV at all.
Whatever EDID that my HDTV is giving out, is not being detected by my fx5200 at all.

It's like the HDTV totally not plugged in!

I've borrowed another PC with DVI out, and it works.
Upon plugging in the HDTV, the ATI Catalyst Driver pops up telling me HDMI detected....

I looked through the forum and noticed that some people are successful in using their 5200 with hdtv. In such a case, is there anything that I can do to force the 5200 to output via DVI with or without detecting my hdtv?

I've run moninfo, and no cigars.... moninfo can't detect the hdtv too.

I've borrowed another PC with a newer generation display card, and it works.

What is your HDTV?

It's a generic OEM hdtv...

I got a X1050 to test out.
It's a bit better.. than my 5200 but still, no cigars.

Recap.
5200 > hdtv
Windows can't detect hdtv
hdtv can't detect my PC

x1050, a bit better, but still no cigars.
Windows can't detect hdtv
hdtv says HDMI IS CONNECTED

Running Moninfo with the x1050.

Monitor
Hardware information........ n/a
Windows description......... Default Monitor

Display adapter
Adapter description......... ATI Radeon X1050
Adapter device ID........... 0x5B631002
Display settings............ 1024x768, 32bpp

Running Moninfo with 5200 returns nothing at all, the hdtv simply is invisible to it

Assuming that the hdtv is not sending any EDIDs out, is there anyways that I can use a software to emulate the EDIDs? And to trick the FX5200/x1050 to output to the dvi port regardless of the detected/not detected hdtv?

Could the HDMI cable be damaged?

I'll try to get a new cable to test it out,

Also, could it be that my hdtv is just, urm... not up to date?

You apparently don't think the HDTV isn't important, but that's the problem most likely not the computer. HDTVs are not computer monitors and they can require very tight timing specs. Without knowing the brand and model of the HDTV, we may not be able to help.

Rbink- Think those cards are good enough? Old generation for sure. What was the hardware in the other comp that worked?

Hi Thanks for the feedbacks.

I got a new HDMI cable to test it out, and indeed that was part of the problem.

GEFORCE 5200
{
HDMI Cable A (Faulty?) > HDTV (Sigma Tango)
Windows can't detect hdtv
hdtv can't detect my PC

HDMI Cable B > HDTV (Sigma Tango)
Nvidia Control Panel detected the HDTV BUT
hdtv can't detect my PC
}

ATI x1050
{
HDMI Cable A (Faulty?) > HDTV (Sigma Tango)
Windows can't detect hdtv
hdtv says HDMI IS CONNECTED

HDMI Cable B > HDTV (Sigma Tango)
IT WORKS!! Plug and plays beautifully.
}

So based on this, can I make the following summary?
Problem with the HDMI cable.
HDMI Cable A is faulty. Maybe damaged by construction works, as the cable is cemented inside the wall, and under the floor.

While my geforce with the new cables can detect the HDTV unit, unfortunately, the HDTV unit is not detecting my Geforce DVI's output. I can't select input source = HDMI from my TV with FX5200. I'm almost there, or am I doomed with the FX5200?

Reading what you wrote here rbinck, could it be that the fx5200 is DVI-I only?
Could I have an DVI-I only interface?
The earliest DVI-I interfaces were actually just VGA analog signals with the digital link to allow the information to be exchanged between the computer and the monitor......

The DVI connection that is most desirable for fixed pixel devices is the DVI-D, dual link connection. This is the connection that most HDTV manufacturers use primarily for compatibility reason

AFAIK, the 5200's were DVI-I only so I think you found your answer.
