This is a nice player in very limiited supply, who knows if it will be available at a lower price again? Bruce and I have this player and are ready for the long haul with a fleet of HD DVD players.

It's a nice player, but who knows if it will ever get another FW update like the Toshiba models?

Yeah, too bad not everyone was able to get an Onkyo. Good players.

Concern about that has been expressed at other forums. My thought is that it should be easy to port the 4.0 firmware over to the Onkyo player, the hardware is identical, only the machine numbers are different is my understanding. I have an Onkyo order number for the new firmware and if it doesn't show up in a couple of weeks, I will call again and try to get to upper level tech support and make sure it is understood that the new firmware update is needed and make it clear that Toshiba has already developed the code, only the same work modifying it that was done with the Onkyo 2.8 version update needs to be done. The contract between Toshiba and Onkyo surely addressed firmware development and I don't expect it will cost much, if anything at all, for Onkyo to get the update. The distribution costs to owners should be all that is necessary.

If the update never happens, it will be big negative to my way of thinking and I will certainly avoid Onkyo in the future.

There are in fact a few minor hardware differences as well as some software differences. Onkyo will at sometime offer the firmware update but as to when is anyone's guess.

joerod at AVSForums has no indicated he updated his DV-HD805 with the Toshiba firmware and it works perfectly. I am not ready to take that gamble yet personally but here is a quote from joerod in the DV-HD805 thread there:

Alright, I just got off the phone with Onkyo...

Here is what I did... I went ahead and loaded 4.0 for the XA2 into my HD805. I know, it was stupid and a big time gamble. The update completed after about 12 minutes or so. I then did what I normally do and turned it back on. Then I remembered I usually unplug them after I do an update so I went ahead and did that. The player started up like normal. Then after the WELCOME screen left I got a PREMIUM DIGITAL symbol instead of Onkyo. Anyway, long story short I went ahead and confirmed that it has 4.0 software loaded. It works perfectly fine. I get exceptional 1080p/24 and it Bitstreams fine. I only tried the 4.0 disc because I have older Onkyo software that I can resort back to if needed. I am happy to say other than saying PREMIUM DIGITAL in the initial turn on screen it is perfect. I spoke with an engineer a few minutes ago. I have now tested 20 HD DVDs which all work fine and load fine. Does this mean everyone should just do the 4.0? That is up to you. If you do just remember to unplug your unit after the update is done. I am glad I "gambled" and this is perfect proof that this unit really is the XA2 in disguise. According to them though their new BD606 is all them... I hope this helps...

Nice to know that, Chris. I have mine in storage now, but that does seem to confirm that the Toshiba updates will probably be able to be applied on the Onkyo.
