Well guys, progress has been made on the home front. I posted problems with an A-35 purchased in March 2008. Of course, these difficulties manfested themselves beyond the 90 day warranty period. My son had the same problems with his A-3, purchased in January 2008-things would read only a few HD-DVDs but would generally read and play standard DVDs. Toshiba has agreed to exchange the units so we have shipped them off. I'll get back with you after receiving the new or refurbished units (I hope).

Thanks for the updates. Did Toshiba state they would replace your A35 with another A35?

Bob, that's great news. I am with holding final judgment until I have the new unit in hand. But so far, so good.

The door bell rang. I answered it and much to my surprise UPS had left a package from Toshiba. The box displayed images and words indicating it was an A-35. Skeptical, I rushed into the house, cut it open and Eureka, it was the replacement for my A-35 (yes, another A-35) exactly one week after I had returned my unit via Fed Ex. Now that's customer service of the highest order by any standard. Maybe this one will hold up. I'll let you know when the replacement for my son's A-3 arrives.

The kind of thing I always like to hear. But then I believed from previous experience that Toshiba tech support was excellent.

Glad to hear about your positive response from Toshiba and that they replaced it for the same model. That is different than what they told me.
Congrats!

Thanks. May be you were unfortunate and got the representative who had previously worked for DIRECTV. They are specialists at that type of thing. I guess I should be ecstatic but I'm afraid I tend to share your view that there is something systemically wrong with these units. I would be very curious to learn the repair/return rate.

What about one of the other couple dozen companies that have or will make Blu-ray players? What if Toshiba makes one?

If the market for standalone Blu-Ray players develops into anything significant, Toshiba will undoubtedly make one someday, just as SONY eventually stopped making Beta VCR's and, even now, sells VHS VCR's and DVD/VCR combos.

Why? Sony looks to me to be taking the lead in getting BD 2.0 players down in price. I loved, and still do love, HD DVD, but reality is reality. I'm eager to get a BD player and will get the best value for ME, regardless of the manufacturer. And, I'll pair that player with my beloved Toshiba HD-XA2, which I hope to be using for many years to come (HD DVD and DVD upconversion).

Bob, I too am excited about Toshiba's response. However, I also own a Blu-ray player. Your tune may change if new HD movie releases are only available in Blu-ray. Be careful that your passion does not overcome your reason, my son.

I've always been impressed with Toshiba service. When a $300 video card went belly-up (in my older 32" TV) 3 weeks after the warranty expired, they refunded me the cost. I thank the tech who urged me to write or call them.
This was some years ago, but it's always encouraging to hear these comments. They've only a produced a few products that held my interest, but I could always count on their customer service even if just a simple inquiry.

Well they certainly made a believer out of me in the service area. But I still have doubts about the quality and reliability of their DVD (including HD DVD) players.

I love their HD DVD players, but considering at the time there was nothing to compare them with..that ain't saying much..but the performance was very good. And I never had any problems other than the usual bugs that were fixed with firmware updates.
Before that, I would have nothing to do with their DVD players. They always seemed very cheap to me. But the beautiful Sony I had only lasted 3 weeks, and then took them another 3 weeks to tell me they would not have a replacement for at least a month. I requested a refund. That was my jumping off point for going with HD DVD.
If a company is not totally flawless in quality, they should at least have good customer service. Tosh seems to have that part down. In honesty, my Samsung duo player has been the best performing player to date.

Folks,
Well, I hooked up the 3rd A3 this weekend!!!!! Up came that dreaded error code[408-----, something like that]. Here we go again!!! Upgrade the firmware from 1.1 to 3.0. Errror code is gone. Played U-271, again, & picture started to freeze!!!!!but NO error code. Cleaned the DVD with soap & warm water, EVERYTHING is OK!! A lot of grief for the consumer but the picture is well worth it!!!

Wll like daleb stated, If a company is not totally flawless in quality, they should at least have good customer service. Tosh seems to have that part down.
I've had a 35" Toshiba CRT (currently in my kid's playroom) for about 14 years without a problem, but it sounds to me like Toshiba's Quality control has gone down the shitter lately. I can only imagine what would have been if they were the format to come out on top.
I wish you well, maybe the third time will be the charm.
Makes me wonder if daleb would have thrown in the towel by now.

My XA2 has froze with one movie and I had to shut it off a couple of times, then it was ok. I haven't downloaded any updates yet. No problems with the A35 so far.
