Okay, let me get this off my chest right now: With Rob Cohen at the helm, this just didn't feel like a Mummy film -- but I liked it. Saw it last night and here are my thoughts:
Rachel W. not coming back as Evie threw the whole thing off I think; like Katie Holmes not returning for The Dark Knight -- it loses the smoothness of the flow of these narratives. Although I thought Rachel W. was quite annoying in the original and sequel, Maria Bello just didn't do it for me, although I suppose she made a decent enough believable older Evie O Connor...the whole thing with Rick's son now getting involved as a mummy digger was inevitable, but the main gripe I had about that was...did anyone else think Fraser didn't look old enough to have a son his age? That was a tad ridiculous; and the underlying sexual notations between Bello and the son were disturbing. Other than that, Jet Li was pretty awesome, if not getting a chance to really show off his martial arts skills so wickedly like in other films...the premise was definitely cool, about now unearthing a mummy of Asian history, and all the problems that came along with it...a Chinese emperor who was seriously evil, perhaps even moreso than the mummy of the other films. There was too much CGI used -- and I thought the Yeti snowmen were a bit silly; it also hit me that the CGI effects, all these years later, didn't really look all that different from the effects used in the first film...did anyone else notice this? The transformation of the emperor from stone to skeleton to immortal human looked almost exactly like what Sommers did in the first Mummy...
This wasn't a great film by any means -- but I'll be picking it up on Blu ray when it arrives, as it's just a whole heap of two hours of loud, obnoxious fun...
Discuss away! :busy:
