Why don't I have sound with my Samsung DLP?

I have a Samsung DLP HDTV that I bought from my brother. I hooked up my PS3 via HDMI cable, made sure the PS3 was set to recognize the HDMI hookup for both audio and video. Video worked fine but the audio is just static. I then hooked up the playstation with the supplied red yellow white cables and it worked, bu of course isn't in high def. I also recently hooked up my COX cable HD service via HDMI cable and the same problem occured; NO sound. I now have it hooked up with the basic coaxle cable until i can get this figured out.
It is important for me to say that my brother used to have it hooked up to surround sound which I personally think is the problem. It is not recognizing the input audio through hdmi or other inputs. There has to be a way that i can access the audio input from a menu or something bu the menu provides very little help

hmmm anyone else have this problem?

Unless there is a setting in the TV's video/audio settings to enable audio via HDMI, it sounds like the audio portion on your TV's controller board or HDMI port is bad. Did you try using a different HDMI cable and or port to rule those out?? Also cheack that the TV speakers are set to on in the audio menu, but since you hear static, it sounds like they are. If so, I would take your brothers advice and look into a decent 5.1 SS system. The audio coming from your TV will not be "High Def" or even surround sound. You can get a decent HTIB for around $300 that will be MUCH better for games and movies than using your TV speakers and is highly recommended. Since the problem happened on both your PS3 and Cable STB, it definately sounds like it is on the TV side (or cable if you havn't ruled that out yet)....
