Firefox Issue Update

IB-Dick

One of our server guys discovered a problem on the server last night, but I don't think that was the issue, since I was still getting the hang this morning. It's obviously a good thing that he fixed something, but it's not clear if the fix any remedied anything.

Yesterday we also were troubleshooting a possible problem, but couldn't find any issues. I found a side shoot of that problem in the vB config... It makes sense that it is the culprit... it's both server side AND browser specific!

Anyway, I'm having a busy day and I don't have time to search around the forum looking for slow pages. Therefor, I'm just going to ask. Is anyone still experiencing bad page loads in FF?

It is mostly only with submitting posts/PMs, and when clicking the QUOTE button for me. THAT can still be painfully slow and has required me to keep multiple tabs open to continue on with other stuff while waiting.

It seems to me that if something is hanging in Firefox and not in IE, the problem is with Firefox. They missed something that IE takes into account, like they left out a timeout somewhere. Therefore while it is admirable to accomodate Firefox, it seems to me the issue should be reported to Firefox so they can fix their browser to act more like IE does. Sort of an upside down idea, I know, since it is usually the other way around.

While I appreciate the idea, this problem didn't exist until HDF switched servers. Over 8,000,000 computers downloaded Firefox 3 in ONE DAY*. To have this new system fail to accommodate one of the two most used browsers in the world, seems a bit self-defeating (provided HDF wants more members).

On the other hand there should not be any php or html code that causes a browser to just hang up and if there is the browser needs to be fixed. There are too many websites with people creating these types of issues and unfortunately the browser programmers have to make allowances for them. That is the whole reason why Firefox came into being. IE did not account for screwy code in the begining. Firefox has caused IE to improve to remain competative and now it is Firefox's turn. I just hope the admins will report this to Firefox. They will find out the culprit pronto, I think.

Seems odd though that Firefox works perfectly with all of the other websites I visit, and the list is quite large.

I agree it is odd. But even so Firefox, or any browser, should not be able to get hung up no matter what. I'm sure they will want to know that this is happening to fix what is wrong that causes it to hang up.

It appears that there is a new hanging point now with "ad.doubleclick.net" today. Was something changed with the code for this because it is now showing as the point where the longest hanging is happening. It is making it worse than previous hang times.

FYI I have been getting lots of hangs today with IE to the point that I have to lof off then back on until the hangs start again. Doubleclick as well as some other ad type cookies etc. seem to be the culprit.

I'm using Version 7.0.6001.18000 I get a slight hang, maybe 1/2 sec., right after the header is displayed the the rest of the site just pops up.

Haven't noticed any while saving editing or posting via the Quick Reply.

It only happens in FF, but every good webmaster should design their sites to be efficient with every popular browser.

It appears to be an issue with IE for a couple of people too, but it does seem to be mostly a FF issue.

It still hangs for me, but I find that if I click on a hung link repeatedly and rapidly, it'll wake up. I know it probably isn't good practice to hammer the server like that, but it does the trick.

Yeah I find hitting a link/button 3 times usually works, but it doesn't help when you hit the SUBMIT POST button or SAVE when editing.

IE works perfect for me, I tried Firefox and it did have problems here at HD Forum. I have never cared much for Firefox, although Firefox 3 was a big improvement over the last time I tried them I still prefer IE for many reasons.

HD Forum has been working better for me than ever, the speed has seemed better with no hangs and I have been staying logged in, in the past I was always needing to re-log in almost every time I visited.

I haven't noticed this problem very much anymore. Are people still having an issue? I'm thinking that someone might have figured out the mistake and doesn't want to announce that they fixed it because it would involve them admitting that they made a mistake.

I switched to Firefox for this site a few days ago and have not seen a large delay except for one time. That does not seem unusual because I get some delays from time to time on many sites. I've never seen a delay that lasts for more than a minute.

There is no change with Firefox. It still has the same hanging issues that it had before.

Thanks, Dare. I hadn't noticed it for a while, which really makes it hard for the tech guys to troubleshoot it. It was back with a vengeance though yesterday.

I appreciate everyone's patience with this. It's very frustrating for us, and I know it's equally as frustrating for you guys. We here at IB really work hard to improve the sites, and this has proven to be a huge problem in that progress.

Late last night it was brutal for me with Firefox. Are the servers backed up around 2:00am by any chance? Around that time it takes for ever to navigate or post anything.

If they are backed up around 2am, I suggest that they change it to around 4am since many people on the West coast are still posting here at 2am Eastern Time. ;)

Did they find the problem with Firefox? For some reason it is much faster with only a very rare hang at this point. It seems that something has changed for the better and it is much better right now. :yippee:

Thanks to everyone behind the scenes who solved this problem and thanks to you also Dick for keeping them working at it until it was resolved.

I thought it was getting better too, until just now. It took 90 seconds after hitting the reply button for this to come up. It may be an isolated incident though. We shall see.
Ebay had hang problems years ago. They had to get more powerful servers.

I am still getting some slowdowns and some lag, but not true "hangs" as I define it, where nothing at all happens for up to several minutes. Especially when hitting the SUBMIT REPLY or hitting the QUOTE buttons.

EDIT: until NOW. :banghead:

Last night it seems a lot of people had hang issues. Bad hang issues. That time is a high traffic time. So the question is- are their servers powerful enough to handle high traffic volume?

Well, that's excellent news. I haven't heard anything back about progress or a fix. I was told by someone that they believe that they found the problem, but as last I checked it was still hanging.

Other than the general slowness, has anyone else seen an improvement with the hanging?

At least the Firefox hanging, particularly when submitting a post, appears to be gone. :yippee:

You all keep talking about FF. I have no clue about that. My company only allows IE browser and I've had a terrible time last night. Almost complete failure to even load HDF website. Straight to the "database error" message. Then, finally I got in and it kept losing pages, posts, etc. This was up until about 10:00 PM Central time.

Until last 2 days - I had no trouble at all as you guys talked about. Now, I'm having trouble.

Our network issues are being actively worked on. We've been having massive outages for some time now.

Great news, that's what I want to hear. I know about the db errors and site loading slow, those are being worked on. I really want to know about the hang in FF... when you try to load a page or make a reply and nothing at all happens (the page doesn't even start to load) for a while and then BAM it loads. That's the FF hang, and they think that it's fixed. I really want to keep the momentum going with them if it's not fixed. From the sound of it, it just might be.

I believe the FF hanging is fixed, but with the other issues on the server it is hard to know for sure which is which when the server hangs then goes to the error page.

The hangs are not dead hangs for me with zero response anymore, but rather loading in slow pieces on occasion. That is why I believe the hanging is fixed or at least not a dead hang with nothing happening. The only sure way to know is if the other problem(s) with the server get resolved but it is looking good on the FF hang problem so far.

Rizzo... I understand your frustration. Please believe me when I say that this is a temporary issue that is being frantically worked on.

To put things in scope... We run a LOT of sites. Our company is called "Internet Brands". This isn't an issue with just HDF. It's network wide. When a problem like this happens at a company like this, it's an extremely important issue. The entire tech department, net-ops, the unix guys.... they are all on the issue. It's kind of a big deal around here. You can pretty much guarantee that it'll be fixed sooner rather than later.
