I need a new set of tires for my '05 Scion xB. The best deal I found was 4 Futura Tires from Pep Boys for $362.31 out the door. I have read some very mixed reviews on them, and I just wanted to check in with you guys to see if anybody has used them before.

Thanks in advance!

A lot may have changed since the old days, but I remember my dad had an absolutely horrible experience with those Futura tires when he had his old Honda Accord, and his Chevy Van. Between 2 sets of tires on two different vehicles, he experienced 2 tire failures from belt separation, and some other failure.

Not only that, but I remember they were always wearing funny, and was going out of balance really easily. Things may have changed as this was a long time ago, but I know that he will never buy those tires ever again.

A few years ago, i put a pair of 275-40-zr17 futuras on the back of my formula, and they were just fine. :what: Never had a problem with them.

They are sourced from Cooper Tire if that helps you at all.

Look for a used tire shop in the 'bad part of town'.

That's where I do all my tire shopping. You can get a set of 4 slightly used brand name tire for $65 on the rim and out the door.

Just don't ask the big tatoo'd guy where they came from.

There's also no wait. You pull up to the curb and they change'm out NASCAR style on the spot. 10 mins, go in, pick out the set you want, they have them on your rims in the remaining 7 minutes.

Can't beat it for the price and every city has a shop like this.

Might be good for a cheap tire for a beater or work car.
But considering it is the only thing between you (and friends or family) and the road, I think I'd put a bit more thought into it.

Not sure what the best tires are to put on a boxy '05 Scion xB.

I put a set of Futura tires on my sisters Accord almost 2 years ago. All in all a decent tire for the price. Average ride noise ad performance in rain or snow. The only real gripe I would have is tread life. At only around 22,000 miles and they have about had it. Different cars and drivers will produce different results as you well know. But if I were you and you plan on keeping the Scion for a while, I would toss in a few more beans and get a better set. For about $100 more (for all 4), you should be able get a better/much better tire with a much longer tread life. I recently had to change out all 4 on my 2004 Sebring Convert with close to 50,000 on the Goodyear Eagles. And the same goes for my Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 70,000 on my Dunlops. Not sure if you have a Discount Tires in your hood, but if so check em out. Cheapest I have found for new tires and have a ton of different brands onsale. and will price match. They also have a good web site with tire recomendations for your vehicle and customer reviews on most of them. They list a Yokahama tire for you Scion for around $89 a tire with 80,000 tread life. Nit saying they will last that long but I do have experience with Yokohama's and they are a very good tire for the price IMO.

Thanks for the replies guys. And yeah, Bigloww, I think I will pony up an extra $100 and get some Goodyear Eagle LS's. Those are what came with my xB and they have been great so far (35,000 miles).

Kam..I ain't heading to the hood! The price sounds good though. :D

Alirght, over and out....

I kind of like those Eagle LS's. I had a set of them on my old Crown Victoria, and they lasted nearly 50k miles. They arn't exactly performance tires, and they won't do very well in snow. However, they are a very good basic tire and are a relative bargain if you can get them cheap on tirerack. A lot of people complain about the Eagle LS, and I think they are expecting a little too much as they are simply a touring tire.

If you want to upgrade a bit, see if the Eagle Responseedge is available in your tire size. I have these on my Focus and have been incredibly happy with them. Not only do they handle really well, but they are nice and quiet and ride well. These are classified as a performance all weather touring tire.

They were stolen off rich white peoples cars. It's not like their knock off tires made in Guam with Bridgestone Potenza stamped on the side.

They've been keeping my family rolling for many many years. I can't remember the last time my wife or I had a flat.

No need for snoberism. Unless you walked outside one morning to find your tires missing. In that case I apologize, but am happy to have possibly purchased them if you live in the Cincinnati area.

If you believe that those tires are stolen off of peoples' cars, then why continue to support such an operation?

If a definition of snobbery is caring about the pedigree of the parts I put on my car, I'm there!

We run the goodyear assurance triple tread on our minivan and they have been great. Not twerrible on teh road noise great treadlife and wet weather and snow are no trouble at all.

I don't think you can judge how good tires are by not having had a flat tire for a while.

It's not like the good tires deflect nails, screws, and other road hazzards and the crappy tires get punctured.

Because I didn't steal them.

Everything you buy is stolen in some form. Be it by cheap labor or shady business tactics and funny accounting math.

It's all semantics.

I'm not sure they're stolen, but how else can they sell me 4 Potenza's for $65 with the tread barely worn?
