The Voom Takedown

If you are mad about this whole thing. If you are mad about how they so quietly did it with no advance notice to anyone in the middle of the night. Shoot, I recently did a DIU promo so I am stuck for awhile and Voom was the main reason I stayed with Dish for the last few years. Here is what many are doing..

Can you live for a little while without HDNet Movies, Universal HD, MGM HD, VS/GF (even lost if you have AT-250, if you downgrade to Essentials where the non-combined Golf [401] and Versus [151] channels are available.. BS!!), Smithsonian Channel HD, HockeyHD and World Fishing Network (The no HD HD channel). A few other new channels have no HD. 5 Star Max is claiming a technical issue right now. Whatever!

Are these channels worth $10.00 a month to you? A few days ago we had these channels and the 15 Voom channels for the same price. For a few hours anyway. They were all up and working very well so don't let any CSR say there wasn't enough bandwidth. There is! They couldn't have had them all running at the same time if that were true.

Lets express our displeasure with Dish by calling, complaining and then downgrading to Essentials. Tell the CSR you will be happy to go back to the Ultimate level if Voom gets back in their channel line-up.

Make sure you all e-mail Dish as well about this after you downgrade. Right now, just use the web site. If nothing happens in a few days, at least like some real statement that they are trying to work something out, then we start hitting that ceo addy. Not just yet on the ceo addy yet. Lets see what Charlie says at Team Summit this weekend.

Dish (Charlie) is right in their saying Voom was not spending enough on programming. There was way too many repeats and not enough new programs. Charlie threw the off switch in the latest stage of the court fight over this. I too believe Voom needed a kick in the a** too. I hope they all come back soon and better than ever over this.

If you are a fan of Voom, follow my lead. Lets try to get the channels back.

On another thread here they claim VOOM is still available if you were originally a VOOM customer. I called DISH today, was in Hawaii for a week, and they say VOOM is completely off the air and not available. So which is it!!!

As to downgrading...you got it!!! But we are going to off the premium HBO Showtime crap we never watch anyway!!!

I'm with YES, i only signd that 2 year contract because of Voom. I am downgrading to essentials. When the contract is up, if there is no voom I'm with Direct, at least they have the NFL.

They are correct ...............
They have no bandwith lefttttttttt
Why?????
If you look Dishtv put another 100 Local HD stations on
echo 3
So if you add the numbers up
Dish ran out of room..............

I don't believe they ran out of room.

No new locals went live in almost 2 weeks. Also almost all of the locals on 61.5 are on spot beams now. That saves alot of room.

And don't forget the fact that the new nationals went live at about 2PM last Monday. It wasn't until close to midnight, 9 or 10 hours later that the first 10 Vooms were shut off and everything was working perfectly during this period. That proved that there is room.

2 things we have here.........
Dish put up about another 100 locals in HD,,,yep they are spot beamed
What they took off of echo 3 were a few Locals from Conus and the Voom.....
Dish replaced a few stations but didnot want to pay for the Voom Stations,,,,So the Dolans are getting rid of the money losing voom stations......

2nd thing we have here
There is no room for anymore HD programing....
Yep Dish can put up another 100 HD stations on Conus but the
picture will NOT look at all like High Definition....
The more stations you add to a satellite the worse the picture gets, its
NOT call Digital,,,,But ITS call compressed video....
You can add as many stations to a transponder, once each transponder gets 4 HD stations on it then I would think its FULL,,,,But if you want to add more then the HD stations will look like all the SD stations on Echo 7..................
Its funny Cable and statellite enjoys calling them selfs DIGITAL....
Alllll it is,Is Compressed Video yukkkkkkkk

Well. My thought is just to downgrade to the "only HD" package for $30 a month. Can't see keeping the AT packages without the VOOM networks.

But, is there room for other future HD channels? Perhaps the 10+ others they plan on adding would not be possible without the removal of some other stations?

Would think dish felt they had a commitment to provide those local HD channels for areas that did not have them yet, and wanted to dump VOOM anyway. Don't forget VOOM is somewhat like a PBS in that it was entirely subscriber supported (ok PBS gets govt funds too). Am sure the cost per channel was higher than trash tv channels who derive their revenue primarily from commercials.

This is what pissies me off, there are dozens of trash channels and what Voom provided was interesting content without giggling hosts mugging to the camera and hundreds of snake oil ads. What do we have now? So called History ch. Geo and Discovery that pander to kids and morons, repeating and repeating idiotic shows about bigfoot and ufo's. Isn't that what sci-fi is for? Even Smithsonian ruins the shows I've looked at with shaky camera, 1 second cuts and goofy hosts close up in the camera constantly blathering jokes that might be funny to a ten year old. TV shoudn't only be for chuckleheads. Niche channels are what satellite TV should be about, when I want to watch stupid I have lots of choices but quality is not being supported.

I couldn't agree more with your "lowest common denominator" world statement. Too bad, felt like I was paying for VOOM to be on the air. Now am paying the same amount and have to watch loud adds twenty minutes out of the hour during banal programming.

I am a new subscriber, I signed up with dish just for the HD channels. 5 days before the dumped them. I got the HD only package and was an original Voom subscriber. I read many posts everywhere about how bad dish was as to customer service, although DTV probley is not much better. To be a new subscriber and loose many of the channels I signed up for without warning even when I asked them if I would get voom in the package and they said yes and nothing about dropping it in 5 days. I am hoping that when they get their satellite problems fixed they will restore them, if not Im also gone but I now have a 2 year contract to wait out. It seems we have no rights, they can drop any program they whish and we cant un subscribe until our contract is over. It sucks.

It sounds like Rainbow Media will be going under soon, even if Dish were keeping the channels:

heck, when you're own parent company is getting ready to drop you, it's time to find a new business to be in!

Dishtv was not making money for the Voom stations.
So they dropped them
The Dolans that own the stations also had them for free on
their own cable stations(cablevision}
Since dish does not have them, cablevision is dropping all the stations.
As I said before they are GONE FOREVER

You said it very well. We can be pissed all we want but the fact probably is this was going to be happen sooner rather than later. We may have gotten a couple of more months out of them but it really wasn't going to last much longer was it? Weren't we all complaining about how repetitive Monsters HD was getting over the last few months? I saw the writing on the wall last month and downgraded to the Essentials package and not a day too soon either.

Bottom line: We can bitch and moan all we want but this was going to happen eventually, it just happened sooner than most would have preferred. Didn't I read that some folks from Rainbow media admitted at Team Summit that "mistakes were made"?

I feel bad for folks like larrylwill who signed up with Dish to receive the voom channels, but the poor folks at customer service didn't know this was going to happen. They don't tell those guys things like this. If they did someone would spill the beans and it would somehow leak before it happened and it would blow up in their face worse than it did anyway. Voom is dead now and it's time to move on. The pressure is on Dish to add additional HD programming since their satellite "exclusive" is gone.

Last year when Cinamax was being offered for a penny or a dollar a month (can't remember which) I called and asked if by getting it I would be starting my 2 year requirement over again. She didn't flat out say no but gave me a long winded answer. So I never went through with it.

This was my last month of my contract but being summer I don't watch much so I'll wait until fall before I decide to stay or not. I like Dishes DVR and over all they've been good to me.

I chose Dish because of Voom. At the time it was an extra $10 a month. I'll stay if I think Dish is going to do something like add more HD channels.

Hokoo

stick with Dish if you like the recievers crazy

I look at the big picture and from what I'm seeing, in the next 2 years both company's will have most all channel's in HD if they keep sending birds up in the sky like they plan

most of my tv that I watch is in HD now so I can wait for Dish to continue to add the rest of the channel's even when most of them don't have the programming yet

better recievers is keeping me here

It was funny
there are 2 dolans...One want to lanch Voom and the other was happy with his NY Knicks and cablevision.
One wanted to lanch a HD sattellie just for HD programing
called Voom.
Its was losing money for a few years until dish picked up many of their stations.
Since Dishtv didnot have many people getting the programing,It only made sense to drop all the stations.
yep I also heard many people complain about the monster station showing the same programing all the time......
I am sure Dish is adding more stations,CNN,CNBC and hope Fox News and MSNBC will be on soon lol....I do miss Rave,,,but I can get the Treasure Channel on Bel Express from Canada

dishnetwork CSR's dont even listen to your complaints or emails, i sent them 2 emails from 2 different addresses and got the same response, if you liked this voom channel, check this out as the replacement, etc.. DISHNETWORK has made a big mistake, voom was the only thing separating THEM with DIRECTV, they had an actual advantage over directv but now they are just the same with directv having just a few more hd channels is all, POOR marketing decision on dishnetworks' part i think. b*stards.

that about sums it up for me. Is not the first time a service does not understand their own market. Might as well go to DirecTV when my contract is up, good time to get a discount I hope!

I got the same generic e-mail form Dish as well when I sent them a complaint e-mail. Trying to compare Chiller as a replacement for Monsters HD what a joke!! I would love to stick it to Dish for making this decision without any notification to it's paying customers!! However going to DirecTV wouldn't be an improvement over Dish they offer basically the same line-up and the hassle of switching is not worth it to me especially since I have never had a technical problem with either of my 622's since i've had them and switching to DirecTV I wouldn't want to chance not liking their equipment. Then again you never know!

Not nescessarily. The wording was.. "In the coming weeks".

I believe there are still talks going on between Dish & Voom. According to uplink reports the channels are still uplinked but are invisable and unavailable to subscribers.

Dish does want the most popular channels but Voom said it's "All or nothing". So Dish had to take down the last 5.

Dish wants 5 channels of Voom or a consolidation of all down to 5. Voom will fold. Charlie likes to play poker you know. :)

That's about where we are. Have a 722 and the wife loves it, am looking to add a fan to it though. It started resetting yesterday which think usually means a heat problem. IT sits near an outside window and the weather here has been warm (Sacramento, CA). Some others have said this helps with both the 622 and 722.

You know Charlie - he rarely announced anything - he just turns it on.

That satellite was multi-purpose, to be rented, used for the Olympics, but it was also going to add National HD channels.

It failed, Charlie panicked, bankrupt Voom, and took their satellite.

He still need more birds in the air to expand beyond the remaining room 20 HD channels.

Without new birds, Dish is in trouble.

Im am new about 3 weeks ago. I signed up for including VOOM only HD. Voom had the best looking HD. All the other HD that I have is not as good as the OTA networks I get on my HD Tivo. It looks about as good as the standard Analog I used to get with my BUD and 4DTV receiver. Its way better than the SD channels but not as good as real HD.
