``We are excited to extend our competitiveness in HD by enhancing our already comprehensive HD lineup with these 22 channels, bringing our total HD lineup to over 95 channels,'' said Eric Sahl, senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network. ``These launches, along with other recent additions such as the New England Sports Network (NESN) HD, reinforce our commitment to offer the best in entertainment.''

Normally you would think so but this is alot! Also notice the official release says "beginning today" so I don't think we will see all of the channels by tonight. The link on the headline page provided sends you to Swanni's page. That says today. This is the real deal.

I knew this was going to be a good week as I stated in another thread as Team Summit starts Thursday. Dish wants to look real good before then.

Wow, that's impressive. The patience pays off! Now we have the channels, the best pricing and the best equipment.

I'm disappointed to not see WGN in with all those channels. I was hoping for more HD baseball. (Never happy)

Will these all be available, with the execption of the premium movie channels, to all subscibers?
I currently have the AT100 plus the HD pack.

I'm working at home right now, so I had only a few minutes to turn on the TV and breeze through the new HD channels (wow!). As a tennis enthusiast, I noticed that I am not getting the Tennis Channel in HD, so I assume that is an AT250 channel (I have AT200). No problem -- I'll just upgrade if want it that bad. Does anybody know offhand if any of the other new HD channels are for AT250 subs only?

Oops.. sorry. But in that case you might like some of the Vooms. Monsters and Rave are watched almost everyday around here. I also have a friend who always needs to look at Kung Fu when he stops by. Nobody likes everything on Voom but I would hate to loose these channels. Not all of them anyway.

Look's like Dish did not gain as much HD channels as previously thought? They added 17 channels today and yet removed 10 VOOM channels for a total of 7 gained.

http://www.dishnetwork.com/hdupdate/

DISH Network continues to be the leader in providing the best movies, sports and entertainment in High Definition. In order to provide you with top quality entertainment, DISH Network continually evaluates and at times, makes changes to our channel line-up. We are excited to announce the addition of over 22 new high definition channels which will provide our customers with top rated programming. As of result of these additions, we removed some channels that are less popular with our customers. These channels are not available with any other satellite provider. Watch for even more high definition channels over the upcoming weeks as DISH Network grows to over 100 of the best national HD channels by end of year.

Seems Dish is also having bandwidth issues.

So does that give Dish more bandwidth to play with is this a swop?

I didn't watch Voom that much but I'm sure Dish knows exactly how many people watch each channel and acted accordingly.

Still, a net 7 gain (incl Smithsonian and Weather channels) it still counts as a good week.

They must of taken off some of the Voom channels after they added the update, because they were all there at one point. Did not notice that.

I show the count (including RSN if you have one in your area in HD) at 52 everyday HD channels to DTV's 61. Eliminate the duplicate East/West movie channels and the totals are 51 DISH and 57 DTV. I could be off 1 or 2.

Still lagging - but much improved. I will miss the Voom Movie Channel, Gallery, World Cinema, Animania.

Should make room for the other 10 channels they have on their hot list.

A quote from MultiChannel News columnist Scott Greczkowski: "The channels removed from the Dish Network lineup are HDNews, UltraHD, Treasures HD, WorldSport HD, The new VOOM HD Movies channel, Filmfest HD, Gameplay HD, Animania HD and Family Room HD....

Plus this .. "There has to be more to this story, Dish had more then enough bandwidth to carry all the new channels plus all 15 VOOM channels, after all their aired all day together without an issue. On the HD announcement channel on Dish Network it mentions that new HD channels will be coming to Dish in weeks. I am wondering if the VOOM channels were removed because of the problem with the AMC14 satellite and this is Dish Networks way of reclaiming bandwidth to launch more nationally know HD channels? If this is the case then why were the VOOM channels removed last night."

Will most likely be a hot topic at Team Summit. I wonder if this is part of a power play on DISH's part to force Voom to drop their lawsuit. Interesting to say the least.

I was surprised they dropped some VOOM. I liked the HD News. I see now I have 9472 & 9486 showing a 30 second looped video telling me all about the new HD channels. It is broadcast in SD.

I will not miss the Voom channels, but the channels they added do not interest me much. My wife likes Bravo and my son likes Disney, so the good thing that will come out of this is that these were the only channels keeping me from getting the all HD package.

My big question is, do these new channels have any HD programming? Bravo, Disney, Travel, TWC, WFN and Toon Disney did not have anything on in HD when I had them on last night. CN was in stretch-o-vision. Smithsonian had a show about tigers that was SD 16:9. I have never heard of any of the movies on MGM channel. I did not check ESPNnews, ABCFam or CNBC because I REALLY don't care about these.

It's great that they added new HD channels, but where is the HD programming?

I'm not complaining, I just don't see what is so exciting about these channels.

Iain1974
05-13-2008, 09:46 AM
Well I think we're all aware that slapping 'HD' on the end of a channels name doesn't always mean there will be a lot of HD content.

I think it's an exciting move by Dish because they're not just laying down and are actually trying to compete with Direct.

Over time these channels, like all others, will fill up with HD content. Except of course material more than 4 or 5 years old.

CNBC and TWC are nice in HD because the have so much info. on the screen at once. A couple of Cinemax were added. Bravo shows movies. Although most Disney daily programming is SD, their movies should look good.
Considering what we gave up, I think its a good trade. I would still like the dispute with Fox get settled so we can get Speed, Fox News, and Fox Movie Channels.

Am I missing something? I watched the weather on TWC HD last night in 4:3 SD and "Major League" was on Bravo HD in 4:3 SD. I'm not saying that "Major League" should look like HD quality, but they could at least find the Widescreen version.

I will say that the SD quality on the HD channels was way better than the normal channels.

Once again, I am not complaining about the new HD channels. I just don't see what all the excitement is about if there isn't much HD content. I did not turn on all of the new HD channels last night, but I turned on most of them at some point and the best I got was some stretch-o-vision and some SD widescreen.

TWC gets alot of info on the screen during our "Nationals on the 8's". That will look alot better after their official HD launch on June 2nd.

On that day they move into their new studios with all HD cameras.

I don't see all of this as a good trade as many of the new channels are not real 16x9 HD. They do however look better.

I will talk more about the Voom removals in that thread.

A quote from April 2007 I found while searching for release info.

The channels discussed for 2007 launch include:

Cartoon Network
CNN
FX
Lifetime Movie HD (just launched)
SciFi Channel
Speed
TBS
The History Channel
The Weather Channel
USA Network

I'm seeing that Lifetime Movie HD was launched prior?? Was it removed? I dont see it in the HD lineups.. anywhere. My wife needs that channel almost as much as I dont.. and thats a lot. Seeing as a few of those channels did just go live, I'm wondering where LMN is.

Also curious as to if and when MTV will go HD.. I read somewhere that it was slated for this roll-out, or sooner than later, however much weight that carries with rumored releases.

Thanks!
Brian
