I am looking for receiver

My receiver is old and outdated now. I want a new with HDMI switching built in and new surround sound options.

These are the models I am looking at. What do you think and which one should I get?

Please feedback on other receviers also. I have a Yamaha now and I like just outdated.

TX-SR606
TX-SR605

These two are very close but there are some sligh option differences. One has more HDMI inputs but I want to know if there is a clear difference. Do not pay attention to Onkyo's pricing on there site as it is lower in the stores.

My budget is around 400-500 for the receiver. I would like to stay below 450.00 but can be convinced to go a little higher. I do not need a 800 receiver.

click here (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/viewCompare.do?oid=208513&oid=181406&user=true) for a side by side comparison. The 606 does upconverting of th einputs which is good and the 4 HDMI inputs is a very nice feature for future connections.

If it were me, I'd go for the 606 but the one thing I don't like about it is the lack of OSD (on screen display for setup) on it.

Thanks that is a good point with the OSD I did not think about that. What receivers have OSD now?

I do like having 4 HDMI inputs. I already have 3 HDMI devices. Xbox 360, DVD player, and HD cable box. I can use the Xb0x 360 on component though like I am now.

Most receivers in the 400+ price range have OSD. According to the Onkyo website, the 606 DOES have OSD plus it has the latest audio encoders in case you got a Bluray player that can decode DTS HD-MA.

I'd go for the 606, for sure!

The TX-SR606 is definitely the better choice.

It has a sub pre-out though which can be used for all powered subs correct? Why would you want the internal amp to drive a sub? Or am I confused here? Please let me know what the difference is so I can make the best choice.

Yes, the 606 does in fact have a sub pre out as you would need. Have no idea what the other poster means.

For some reason, the circuitcituy comparison I linked says the 606 does not have OSD or sub pre-outs. I went to Onkyo's website and looked at the photo of the rear and sure enough, the sub pre-out is there!

CC has mistakes on their site.

Here is the link to Onkyo's website for the TX-SR606 (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR606&class=Receiver&p=f)

Ya after your post I noticed the same thing about Circuit Cities ad. They have a few mistakes about the 606 on there site.

I went and saw the 606 at Fry's yesterday. Now I just need to find the right price and I will buy it.

Thansk for the help so far.

This confuses me ...........................606 ..........605
Component Video Upconversion .......- .............Check
Analog to HDMI Upconversion ..........Check ......Check
480i to 480p Processing ...........(DCDi Edge).....(DCDi)
1080i Upscaling ...............................Check ........ -
1080p Upscaling ................................ - ........... -

So the 605 WILL take a Component 1080i signal from say an Xbox 360 and pass it over HDMI correct. BUT the other Analog sources say an old DVD player will only be upconverted to 480P and passed over HDMI to the TV right.

With the 606 all Sources are converted to 1080i and passed on to the HDMI Right.....what is with the Component Video Conversion not having a check next to it?

I am in this same place I was ready to pull the triger on the 605 until the 606 came out. the extra HDMI is nice but not completely necisary for me....My main concern is onw wire to the tv. and every thing else into the box.

Sorry to thread jack just wondered if someone could clear this up for me!

I have pondered this also and after reading the 606 manual I think it is as follows - on the 605 the component video upconversion is from 480i to 480p only no actual resolution upconversion while the processor in the 606 takes the signal and switches it to HDMI and upconverts to 1080i (or you can leave it unchanged as passthrough). If not I am sure I will be corrected.

I has the 605, it's a great receiver that does everything I want it to do in my mid-sized home-theater system. I haven't done it yet but I would be confident in it enough to put front tower speakers and a bigger sub-woofer on it as well.
It has OSD which is ok and does what I've wanted it to do and it certainly had enough inputs on it to take care of my requirements.

So if I plug an Xbox in the Component on a 605. It will send the signal to the tv through the HDMI.....IF the Game is 480i it converts it to 480p and sends it HDMI...If it is a 1080i game it will send the 1080i game signal to the tv via hdmi with no conversion...right?

The 1080p is not a concern to me so much as the thing passes every signal either upconverted or not to the TV through the HDMI. This way when my wife wants to watch a movie all she has to do is turn the HD DVD player on and the TV on and hit DVD on the Onkyo Remote....LOL

Right now it is we change the input on the tv and the input on the surround...and for some reason that is too hard for her..lol. And my reciever is ancient so it is not really clear which channel you are on at any given time.

on the 605 when you change from composite or component to hdmi the highest you can go is 480p. If you use component cables all the way through you can go up to 1080. If you have hdmi in it will go unchanged tothrough to your tv. This means if you want to use high def component source you need to runt that all the way through. The 606 will convert over from composite or component to hdmi and upscale it up to 1080i. If you only want to run one cable from your receiver to your tv and not two sets then get the 606.
