Upgrading to HD

Hey guys,
I'm a current Dish 500 subscriber with the Top 250 programming package, but I'm interested in upgrading to HD. I just bought a 46" LCD, and while the regular SD doesn't look terrible, it certainly doesn't compare to watching a DVD, and I'd like to get the most enjoyment out of my new toy. I'd probably go with the HD Essential package for $10 a month, but I'm not crazy about the idea of paying a lease fee for the receiver. If I buy one off of E-bay, I wouldn't have to pay Dish the monthly lease fee right? Or will they try to charge me regardless? I know, $6 a month isn't much, but it adds up over the years, and I've been pretty pissed off at Dish for awhile (customer service sucks, but the programming is good so I've stuck with them), so I hate to pay them any money that I don't have to. haha.

The lease fee or additional receiver fee is the same amount so leased as compared to buying does not give you any advantage. If you are keeping your current receiver on your account you will be charged one or the other. There is no lease fee or additional receiver fee if the new HD receiver is the only receiver on the account.

 I subscribed to HD last year. I have the 622 DVR with OTA for my local channels. I know the VOOM channels show a lot of repeats, but I like them too. NASCAR and the DVR is great. I start watching the recording about an hour into the race. Skipping over the commercials works great.

And be VERY careful when buying off eBay as many of the receivers listed there are stolen and/or still have balances which must be paid off prior to any service being used with them.

Yep.. The OP would want the R and S numbers off the receiver and check those numbers with Dish before bidding. Dish will tell you if there are any problems with those numbers. They indentify the receiver and the smart card.

Just ask the seller this question and see if he answers. You also want to make sure you are dealing with someone with a good rating. 98% or higher with over 20 previous sales. Nothing less.

Also, don't forget once nice advantage of leasing from dish is if the receiver fails, it's easy to get a replacement. And they do fail on occasion.

If the new HD receiver will be your only receiver or primary receiver, the lease fee is included in the programming pkg.

lease it!
