128M Of Persistent Storage is simply not enough!

With all of the fairly cool HD DVD Web-Enabled features now hitting the market (and more on the way), the persistent storage on ALL of my HD DVD players is getting full, way to fast! I now find myself spending noticeable amounts of time, attempting to manage the meager 128 Megs that is built into the Toshiba players.

NOTICE to TOSHIBA!

a) 128 MB of Persistent storage IS NOT ENOUGH PERIOD! The specification call for this amount of memory, to be the minimum only!

b) Memory is pretty inexpensive these days, and I am sure that a 1 GB memory module is not going to raise the player mfg. costs by any significant measure, especially at volume!

c) Where is the firmware update that will allow the USB ports to be activated for external memory or peripherals, today? The system has now been in the market for a year now, and Web enabled content is here NOW. At a minimum, it would be REALLY beneficial to allow support for a Keyboard and or Mouse connection! Using a remote to enter user names and passwords is just this side of majorly annoying! An external HD system would be ideal and would allow for future HD movie downloads through the players! (al la the PC, X-BOX and PS3 systems)

d) How hard would it be to have the HD DVD SA players show the HD DVD logo right at system power up, rather than after the system post/diag. and just before the HD DVD disc read? The PS3 manages to do this! Why is it so difficult for the HD DVD system to do this? If Windows CE can not handle this, then Toshiba call up the Amiga folks! :what: They are looking for a mainstream CE mfg. to leverage their OS! Plus it really multi-tasks!

Maybe Toshiba could enable the USB ports on all HD DVD players so we may then add more storage (flash drive).

The HD DVD players do not use Windows CE or any other form of Windows for the OS. They use a Linux core for the OS.

I agree that they SHOULD activate the USB ports for additional optional persistent storage, and I might add that they just update the players to allow the disc tray to open immediately while the OS boots up too.

The first gen players apparently used Linux however the Second gen and later appear to be using CE. The player diag Screen Shows a Windows CE version number. (Display + 195 + Display) on the remote and mid. way down the screen you will see the current WinCE version.

There's also the option of connecting to a NAS on your network, that sounds a lot better than a usb stick.

Can anybody explain what persistent storage is. I have seen it mentioned on other thread pages. I have the HD-A3 and have seen it in the maintence menu but have no idea what it is there for. Is there anywhere that one can get an explination of what all the different settings in the maintentance menu are used for. I was having a freeze up problem and one hi def member said to delete persistent storage which i have no idea what to do.

This might help a little with the explanation:
http://wiki.digital-digest.com/index.php/Persistent_Storage

The Maintenance Menu tool is provided to help you manage the usage of this retained memory. Each movie can allocate some of this 128 MB (in the current HD DVD SA players) when you download things from the web or use the bookmark features on SOME HD DVD titles. Because there is only 128 MB currently accessible, YOU must actively manage the allocation of this memory. If there were more memory available, then there would be less work (for now:) ) to do in removing some of the older stuff. For example I do not want to delete my Transformers elements as I do frequently show this movie and the Web enable features to friends that come over. So the persistent memory for this, I choose to keep allocated in the player.

The USB ports on all HD DVD players are nice to have. Hope Toshiba releases a firmware update to enable those babies for some extra storage or something? I am sure they will use this as a selling point IMO.

Does that mean that the A-3 has to be connected to your internet modem to use persistent storage

Has anyone tried to connect a mini cruser to the USB yet? It would be nice if they would do more than just memory, maybe keyboard support, access to things like camara's etc, maybe even printer support.

Not necessarily. You can have a movie title that can store your bookmarks into the persistent storage, for later recall.

I have been trying to hook stuff up to the USB ports(flash and portable hard drives) with no success. It is annoying that one movie(Transformers) can fill up the "Persistant Storage". I have written to Toshiba to ask if anything is coming and they don't seem to have an answer. I suggest everyone just bombard them with complaints/questions about the USB ports. In the menus it seems like adding storage may have been a plan but hasn't come about yet, after choosing to go to persistant storage you have to choos it again instead of it just showing what you've got on the player like it will be a menu of drives? Just think of how great it would be if you could hook up a small HD to the player for all your downloads or have flash drives you can keep with the movie in the case so you aren't wasting space when not watching the movie, hey then you could even show it to others who have a player but a slow or non-existent network.

Exactly my point for this Thread! :yippee:
