This may actually be a general 'HD is great' post rather than a 'Blade Runner is great' post, but so be it. I got the Blade Runner Box Set (with box) for Christmas and UPS finally brought my HD-A30 yesterday. My first HD-DVD viewing was of course Blade Runner 'Final Cut'. Like I said, frelling amazing! I first watched this movie at home off VCR tape on a 25" CRT TV over 20 years ago. This was better:yippee: Ten mins into watching, when my mouth closed and I could talk again, I told my son, "This is the best $3500 I spent in a really long time." (got all my sig stuff in past 6 weeks, other than receiver).
All the detail was so vivid that I found I could actually enjoy the movie plot much better since I didn't have to mentally de-compress the poor often dark image in my head to see what I was on the screen. I did the Toshiba 1.3 firmware just after hooking the A30 up. The sound was the absolute best I have heard at home, from any media.
I will get into the other versions over the weekend. Tonight's feature is the Stardust HD-DVD my son bought.

I am glad you have had a WOW experience with HD DVD right off the bat. I think you will have a similar, although slightly lessened experience when you watch Stardust as that is not quite on the same visual calibur as Blade Runner. Also, it really seems to blow people away when they see an old beloved film look better than it ever did before. I can't tell you how many people have been blown away by what they did with Blazing Saddles, for instance.
Honestly, I am one of the few Sci-fi fans at my age that has still never seen Blade Runner. I once dated a girl that had never seen Top Gun, and I think the relationship ended just because I found it completely bizarre that she had never gone out of her way to see it. How is that possible? I guess I am in that same boat when Blade Runner is concerned. I have seen bits and pieces of it, but I always have turned it off because I didn't want to watch it half way through, etc. Why I haven't bought it or rented it by now is a complete mystery to even myself.
However, I intend to pick up Blade Runner in just a couple of hours when Best Buy opens it's doors. They were sold out on Wednesday, save for a few of the same boxed sets on the shelf that you received. I want the "cheaper" edition, and they weren't going to be restocked until today. I'll have to let you know what I think after watching it.
Nothing will probably beat an old favorite redone in HD, but there are more WOW type experiences to be had for you, if you pick up any of my recommendations:
1. Hulk (not as bad of a movie as everyone said, and It looks AMAZING)
2. Children of Men (This might actually be the best looking HD title, and it's a great movie to boot)
3. Batman Begins (The PQ is top notch and the soundtrack will blow you away)
4. King Kong (Jaw dropping)

I bought Blade Runner on Blu Ray only because they were sold out of it on HD DVD but I exchanged it for the HD DVD version as soon as it was available this past weekend.
The Movie itself looked and sounded great and this was the first time I have watched this movie and I was pretty impressed to say the least.

The look is amazing and contains some of the most details I’ve seen so far from HDM. I’m not a huge fan of BR but sure wish all future titles look this good! This title has now become my demo disk for sure. I truly believe anyone that is on the fence about buying a HD player will run out and get one after seeing this disk presented correctly.
All the hard work I read about making this transfer has certainly paid off in spades!! :yippee:

I'm exactly the same (or was). I finally bought and watched this yesterday and have to say that it was really a great movie, and the fact that it looked so good after all these years is simply amazing. It definitely had that WOW factor for me as well. Tonight I think I'll delve into the rest of the discs. :yippee:

Heh, I feel a bit better about myself as I have never actually sat through all of it either, and I am definately a sci-fi fan, and a fan of Harrison Ford in general.
I saw it in the drive-in as a kid and fell asleep about 20 minutes in (it was the second feature), and then as an adult I caught about the last 20 minutes on tv one night, which has kept me from ever wanting to see it again since the ending was spoiled.
I think I'll give it another shot now though, especialy if the PQ is as good as you guys are saying it is. I remember hearing something about a game being made some time ago, any of you guys ever play that?

Yeah the game was made for the PC and I beat it about 5 times. I think it will still run on XP even though it was made for 95.

I just popped in my new Blade Runner HD-DVD (from the 5 disc HD-DVD set) and I'm truly shocked!
For years....YEARS, I've seen this film with lots of grain and unworthy audio.
But not only is the 5.1 audio outstanding (obvious from the very beginning), but...even more amazingly...the image is so clean and sharp, with much less grain and is just a joy to watch.
It felt almost like when I first saw Blade Runner in a Japanese theater back in 1982!

I don't know if it's apples to apples to compare it to Planet Earth, like saying a particular comedy movie was better than a particular drama. They can both be best at what they are. PE is a recent made high tech movie that is in it's original format. BR is a 26 yr old movie that was not the best tech at the time even back then. It's new version is pretty miraculous compared to the original, which was my original point. I would be surprised to see another medium tech 25+ yr old movie look as good on today's TV tech as Blade Runner. I have not seen HD Star Wars ('77), but would expect that to be good too, but it was pretty great tech by '77 standards though too.

No one even tried to change your opinion. You are the only one looking at this thread with 'whats the best there is' thinking. Actually, no one here was talking about comparisons with other discs before you mentioned it (I believe). Everyone here is in general agreement, the quality of BR was hugely improved over the original, and thats it, the whole point of the thread.
If I say I think the '65 Dodge Hemi is a great motor, it does not instantly imply I think it is the best ever motor on the planet earth (pun intended) and am begging all comers to argue about it.

I have to agree. They did a terrific job in all respects.
I will attempt to break down this 5 disc set for those interested.
I just spent the last week watching all 5 versions. Then I watched The Final cut with all three commentaries. The Ridley Scott commentary I though was weak. As was the second commentary. But the third one with Syd Mead etc. was great.
Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner was a very good extras disc with a lot of insightful commentary. Standard Def though.
The 3 versions on disc 3 are great for comparing all the different versions.
Dis 4 extras includes rare footage of Philip K. Dick (among other things), and well worth watching. Again, Standard Def.
Disc 5 has the super rare workprint with commentary by Paul M. Sammon. This disc with and without commentary is a must watch.
Last but not least is "All Our Variant Futures"; another must watch. The people involved in remixing the audio for the final cut explain how they did it. And it wasn't easy.
Note: The workprint is not available in SD. SD is a 4 disc set.

Well I finally got around to watching my Bladerunner HD DVD.... All I can say is WOW!!!
I swear it was like I was watching the movie for the first time.
Id give it a 6/5 on video
and 6/5 on audio.... All studios need to see how it is done and watch this movie.
Blade Runner and the Kubrick films are enough reason to have a HD player IMHO.
The only thing with the Kubrick films was A Clockwork Orange. I have always liked this film, but I read the transfer was horrible so I did not buy it. I am still waiting for my free copy of Full Metal Jacket to come by mail.

The Kubrick films has awesome transfers. The only one that was sub standard was the original release of Full Metal Jacket with the white cover and helmet. The films are all in the correct theatrical aspect ratio for the first time. 2001 is stunning, especially when it is forty years old.
I hope they release the other Kubrick films soon. But six was a great start.

Wow...
I know this thread is older, but I just had to add my two cents here. I just got this over the weekend and I was just floored by the quality. Next to Planet Earth this is definately the most stunning picture I've seen yet.
On the subject of the film, I was totally taken back by it. I saw it in the drive-in as a kid and I fell asleep, which kinda kept me from ever watching it again as an adult and boy was I missing out. What a fantastic film...
Call me thick-headed, but I'm a little confused at the ending.
**spoilers I suppose ****
I'm assuming Rachael is not going to live long and he knows it right? But if she is some experiemental version superior to the others, do we assume she will live beyond the 4 year limit the others had?
Why do they have to run exactly, I know his boss mentioned her in the list of replicants that he had to wax, but why? Did she do something wrong?
What about Edward James Olmos' character...
So, he knows Deckard is having an affair with Rachael, but does that mean he isn't going to turn them in, or is that who they are running from?
Also, am I crazy, or are you supposed to be considering the possiblity that Deckard is a replicant too?

Oh, duh... I forgot just their very existance on earth had been outlawed.
As far as the box set goes, I personally only bought the regular collectors edition and now I'm kinda regretting it. I don't really want to have to find someplace to store that briefcase, but I'd like to have the little collectable things that are in there. If I see it in firesale I'll probably buy it again. Or maybe get it on BD when I make the jump...
