National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

I picked this up a few weeks ago and hadn't watched it yet. After watching part of it last night on TNT, I decided to finish it on HD DVD today.

I hate rating systems as there doesn't seem to be a great standard. 10 point systems I find more accurate, but I'll use the 5 point system. My rating is based on 1 being awful, 3 being average and 5 being way beyond expectations.

PQ: 2/5
AQ: 3/5
Movie: 4/5

The PQ of Christmas Vacation was not what I expected. It wasn't awful, but it was definetely below average from the other titles I've seen. I think they definetely could have had a better transfer on this.

The AQ was fine. Its not a real great movie for audio, so its hard to rate it. I went with 3 since I'd say it was average.

The movie itself is a lot of fun. It's very much in tune with the other vacation movies and perfect for Christmas time.

Overall, I'd say you wouldn't miss much by having it on DVD. I think upconversion will be just fine for this title.

You know, I viewed this 2 days ago and had high hopes as well. Then I was disappointed in the PQ too. I thought the PQ would have been better than what I viewed. The AQ was average and of course I loved the movie itself! :D

I have held off purchasing this because of the reviews on the bad PQ. Should I pick it up anyway or wait for a re-issue down the road?

I don't know if we'll ever see a re-issue. Its just not a movie that benefits tremendously from High Def, even though it could look better.

I really don't see any need for AQ improvements as that was fine - nothing special, but there's really nothing special audio-wise in the movie.

Might want to try renting just to see what you think. I'm not disappointed I have it, I just wish it was a better transfer.

Was it simply because of the original copy or what was the re-mastering process just underdone?

I agree. You may want to rent this first to see if you care to make a purchase (HD-DVD or SD version). I personally like Chevy Chase so this swayed me to the purchase of HD.

What is your comparison of the Oppo and the HD-A2 far as upconverting SDs?

I'm not sure.

It honestly looks about the same, but I can see a difference in some of my DVDs on the HD-A2 player. For example I have one of the original copies on DVD of The Hunt for Red October I think from 2001 and it looks pretty grainy with my OPPO, but some of the grain is gone when I use the HD-A2.
