Convert MKV to Mpg

Hey all, I'm interested in making and AMV (Anime music video) and am using Sony Vegas 6.0 to do so. But i cant seem to convert my MKV to a suitable format for Vegas. I've tried converting int to AVI in hopes of being able to convert from AVI to MPG but it wont recognize the format... any suggestions?
