HELP, my screen is getting burned?

Ok for some reason my TV (low level Insignia) acts strange when I try to actually use it for High Def viewing. It's fine with regular coaxial and composite cable but if I plug in a component cable (my tv doesn't even have an HDMI input) then it acts up...

there's a spot up in the top right corner that starts getting strange, if the screen goes black, it looks REALLY black and when it's actually displaying something, it looks yellow up there...this happened in the past but I haven't used this tv with component cables in awhile so i kinda forgot. The last time it happened I noticed on the top left it started tinting kinda blue.

Also I noticed that if I try to put it into 1080I or 1080P the right side of the screen bows in a little, like some of the pixels don't display anything they're just black.

This is all with my new PS3 and mind you the component cables I'm using are kinda cheap that could only be the cause for the dead pixels not the discoloration because that happened before with my Wii component cables...

phew that was a lot anyone who can help, thanks :)

oh and the tv is a regular tube tv, not flat panel or anything (paid 400 bux for it last year on black friday)

40 views and no replies? :(

I know it's a long message but I'll sum it up for people who don't want to read all that :)

If I use component cables to play video games, my tv gets discolored and looks sort of burned, yellow on the right and blue on the left.

Have never had component cables do that, and would guess it is something else possibly the tv itself. When you say it acts ups when you try to get HiDef through it, does that mean your only HiDef source is the PS3 or do you have ota or some other source for HiDef programming/

Have you tried taking it to the store to get their opinion? You could hook it up there to see if it does it from one of their component sources.

Best of luck resolving the problem.

well I tried both my Wii and PS3 with component cables and it does it with both. It does the discoloration no matter what with the component cables, but when I actually go up to 1080 it does the weird thing with some of the pixels not lighting up.

Am not a PS3 or game console owner so forgive my ignorance, but do they have 720p selectable output. If so, does the tv act up at that resolution? Am guessing that 720p IS its native resolution and does not require any scaling or de interlacing.

it lets me select whatever resolution I want, 480i, 480p, 720p (not sure if there is a 720i), 1080i, and 1080p. It doesn't do the dead pixel thing with 720p which is weird, but it does the weird burning thing no matter what resolution it is, any of them with the component cables.

First off, there is no 720i. Almost sounds like you have two problems going on. Possibly one in the tv, the colors you describe. And possibly a problem using 1080 with the PS3.

I really would consider taking the display, presuming you can carry it safely, into the retail store and hooking it up to something there. Or, get a friend with a HD DVD player to bring it over and see if the problem persists with it. Have them bring their cables too, but really doubt that is the problem.

HA! I can't carry it by myself...it's freaking huge (not flat panel by any means) and weighs a TON. Besides it has no warranty on it so I'm not sure what they would say if I walked in with a giant TV. Don't really know anyone with anything that can output in high def :(

All I know is, the color thing has moved on, it looks like it's doing it with the composite cables now so I think it's just a shitty tv :(

As far as the 1080 problem, I guess I'll just stick with 720 until the damn thing dies completely...well thanks for the help

Oh, thought you had a flat panel, my mistake. So this must be a CRT based display (picture tube).

Discoloration on a CRT can be caused by a nearby magnetic field, but since you state that it does not show this discoloration through the coaxial or composite inputs it must be something else. Sounds like something is wrong with the input board on your tv, at least for the component input part.

The only other thing I can think of to try is going back to square one and making sure your component cables are correct (red to red, green to green, blue to blue). Make sure you are identifying the blue and green inputs correctly on both the tv and game console, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. You could even try switching the around, won't hurt the tv. Can't think of anything else to try, let me know if you get it working.

well my tv has 2 sets of component inputs so I tried switching to the other set and it doesn't seem to be doing it now! as far as only being able to go up to 720...i can live with that :) thanks

If I recall correctly, there is no such thing as a 1080p CRT TV, so if you're trying to use that resolution it might be the problem.

well that fixes the dead pixel problem but not the burning problem :P

btw this is a really old thread
