My sister has a Hitachi 1080i (Tube) rear projection HDTV with a DVI input. She had Dish Network install a standard def DVR their model VIP525 (connected to her HDTV via composite video). The thing is I believe she should have ordered the HD DVR and use the DVI or component video inputs on here HDTV. Also will the output from a DVD player pass 480i via it's composite video out or do I have to use the component video out to get 480i?

Not sure exactly what your asking but composite does support 480i. It is for the most part your weakest connection option. I would use S-video over composite and definately component when possible. Component will support 480p (and 720p/1080i/p) so if your DVD player has component, go that way. If it is progressive scan, it will allow your TV to upscale to it's native resolution for a bit better picture and in some cases, much better..
So I would connect the Dish STB via S-Video and the DVD player with component..

Hey thanks. I think I'm going to tell my sister to get Dish Net to send here the VIP 622 DVR then when I go there next month I can set it up using the component video for both the DVR and DVD player. That way I can put an auto switch in the setup so she doesn't get confused when switching HDTV inputs.
Also anyone know if there is a auto switch box that has both composite video and component video inputs and provides for a single component video output?

I have the exact TV your sister does hooked up by component since the 622 doesn't have a DVI connection and I never got around to a DVI/HDMI cable. The hd picture with the component connection has always been very good.

The TV has a built-in switch!!
Just go to the Input/Source/A/v and hit the button - it will switch inputs.

I have a 622 HDMI and component, a TiVo, a DVD player plugged into my Hitachi 57F59. Press the input button on the remote of the TV to switch between inputs.
The TV does 1080X1280, so component or HDMI is your best bet.
It does a pretty good job with composite signal (as do most CRT displays), but she should have at least have gotten a ViP211 (non-DVR).
It might be too late to upgrade to HD without going to ceo@echostar.com.
I love my 622 - great picture, great interface.
