Just got home with my newly acuired XBR960 as a purchase off CL minneapolis. Asking price was $400 but seller accepted $350 cash. I'm pumped but am having second thoughts about returning the Panasonic plasma TH-42PX75U that I got on Black Friday for $999. Decisions are so hard.

Nice find. Did it come with the stand? I found a KV-34XBR910 with the stand off CL for $300. He had been listing it for a while for around $600, then all of a sudden he dropped it to $300 and I jumped on it.

Before that I picked up a KV-36XBR800 with the stand for $450, so now I have two CRTs! Like you I ought to decide which one to keep. I like the big 4:3 tube on the 800 but the 910 has that Super Fine Pitch tube that really does make an improvement in the picture quality.

These both are strictly game console displays, I have a 50 inch LCD for our main TV. That 800 is really better for the games that were made for the 4:3 screen which is just about all of them on the PS2 and original Xbox. The 910 is awesome for the 360 and PS3 that display in 16:9. Tough decision for me on which one to get rid of :what: Maybe I will keep them both! :gamer

No stand. Hopefully we can find a smaller wall unit that can handle the 196lbs. I brought back the Pana on the way to work last night.
I too found a couple 36"XBR's and even a 40"XBR250, but I thought it best to go with the widescreen as this is will be the family room tv.
We're on schedule to recieve our DTV HD reviever box next week.

Outstanding tv. Produces perhaps the most accurate HD image available. Period. Only drawbacks: weight, one HDMI input (easily remedied by the purchase of a switcher from Terk or other manufacturer) and not 1080p. I've owned one for approaching three years. Wouldn't trade it for love or money. Your deal was exceptional. Mine costs almost 2 grand.

Yea it is fun finding these perfectly fine top of the line Sony CRTs so cheap! It is a lot more fun than going to a store and putting down a comparable amount of money on a LCD display. Plus in the end you have a beautiful piece of equipment that is just as good or better than the LCD.

Sometimes I wonder if any of the sellers regret letting the CRT go after getting their new flat panels home. Unless they go out and spend the big bucks they are not going to get a better picture than the Sony Super Fine Pitch CRTs. Maybe a lot of them just want a larger screen.

Oh you took the Pana back! How did it compare picture quality wise to the 960? I assume you did a side by side comparison while you had them both home, or not?

Well I don't know. You know folks have this thing about slimness. The move toward flatscreens plays right into the skinny is better ethos. In fairness to flat panels, some of them do produce excellent images but I'm not sure they will ever reach the black levels of good CRT's. CRT's are heavy and difficult to move about. They are what one might call placement challenged. Flat screens can go almost anywhere and are generally much easier to move around.
The relatively fast rise of flat screen proves that for many, sexy and convenience are more important than image quality.

The one thing that I didn't realize till I set it on our temporary stand (birch buffet from the formal dining room) is that she's got a butt on her! Maybe once we find a stand I'll inset the wall and back her into the wall that adjoins the garage with a cable access panel from the garage.

Lucky Ducky, No I wasn't able to do a side by side, but the wife says the XBR colors look better. Happy wife= happy life.

I still love my 30" 910 ... i'm sure I'll keep this tube for gaming... I spent 1500 on it almost 4 years ago and I'm guessing the most I could get is a couple hundred bucks...I hate the size and weight, but how can you let it go for 200 bucks right?

I have had mine for about 2 years. This is a great hdtv, we watch all of our tv from the bedroom and it's perfect size for that room. Just picked up a Panasonic BD30 Blu Ray and the combo of the two is awesome.

I've also had mine for three years and paid about the same. Love it - especially the blacks. No LCD or Plasma can approach it for a good black .

I bought a 34xbr960 for 2 grand 3 yrs ago. There simply is no finer picture than this set. Ask anyone who owns one, read any review. This set is top of the line. Who cares about weight and size?? How many times is someone going to move their tv?? You can have your big screen LCDs, plasmas, etc... Brag about picture size. I'll take the xbr960 over any other television regardless of size 7 days a week. You got a steal, enjoy and don't look back.

Your posts all confirm, for the uninitiated, that a good CRT is unbeatable. While Sony's XBR series LCDs are outstanding, they really can not match the picture quality of the 960. At $350, I might be inclined to buy anther one. What a deal.:yippee:
