Just wanted to give anyone thinking about canceling dish fair warning. I called and canceled my service and was told my boxes were coming. The CSR told me I had 15 days for my equipment to arrive back to them. The boxes arrived some six days later I shipped them out on day eight and on day nine my checking account was debited in excess of 250 dollars in equipment costs. I called dish on it and alerted them to the facts at hand and was told that upon retrieval of my equipment the money would be credited to my account. Some six weeks later and a fraudulant claim from Chase Bank and myself still no credit. So to all considering leaving Dish beware.

wow... im in the same boat kinda. Cancelled my dish and boxes are said to be on the way but still not here. I did start up a new service in HD though. Fingers crossed...

DirectTv is as bad or worse in my experience.

Did you send back the LNB as well? That is usually part of the equipment that needs to be returned to avoid the charges to your card.

They are? First, Direct does not require the owner to disconnect their LNB from their Dish and then charge them if they don't, like Dish does. (I thought that was absurd. Dish should disconnect them self if they are that concerned). Secondly, most of us own our equipment so they do not require you to send it back. Those that do not own it and have to send it back, I have yet to hear of any incident similar to this, while I have heard of this same thing happening with Dish customers on several different occasions (my cousin included). In fact I have an entire garage full of old direct satellite dishes and receivers, one is a newer H20 (HD reciever). Not once have they asked for anything.

Why is that? That makes no sense. Direct wants the LNB left on the Dish and the Dish left on the roof to make it easier for a reinstall or for a future owner to subscribe to their service. It seems Dish would want the same thing. Or at least take it down themselves since they put it up.

My response to the OP was not to rate DTV or DN as better than the other, just to say that they both can be problematic when canceling service. We have different experiences.

I have had Dish and DTV. When we moved from SoCal to Sacramento DTV wanted our HR20 back or 150.00. Had paid cash for it, not a lease and had completed service agreement through installer/supplier BCK Communications. Felt very strongly that since I paid the 360.00 retail and had completed term of agreement to boot that it was mine. I got bills with a zero balance but letters stating I owed 150.00 (all from DTV not BCK Communications). Phone support was a joke. When DTV threatened collection I referred it to the CA State Atty General with all the original retail sales receipt, and DTV communications stating my account had a zero balance and other letters saying I owed a 150.00 fee or must return the HR20. DTV then responded in writing to the State Atty General saying the HR20 was mine and the account had a zero balance. They offered no explanation for the discrepancy between the zero balance bills and the letters demanding a return of mds or 150. So I was not surprised when two weeks after that I called to check and see if I owed anything, they stated over the phone that I still owed the 150, that it was IN collection (apparently not true) but that they could reverse the collection if I had DTV installed at our new home in Sacramento. It never went to collection and I never did business with DTV again.

My sister in the Bay Area had a similar problem with DTV but was able to resolve it without an attorney.

Before DTV, we had the DishNetwork. When we moved had also completed agreement and they did not want any of the equipment back although it was leased. If Dish is now requiring the LNB to be returned it may be due to the rising complexity and cost of those.

I agree to an extent. Both companies have good and bad CSR's. When you have thousands of people dealing with customer complaints (nobody calls when everything works fine), you will have some people who are just simply rude and don't want to deal with costumers.

My cousin works as a CSR for TWC and they have to maintain a minimal average of time spent with each costumer of the phone or they can lose their job. Sometimes a CSR will not want to deal with an issue just to get a person off the phone in order to decrease their costumer/time average, knowing they will just call back and talk to someone else.
