newbie question

My uncle just upgraded his Dish Network, and He gave me the 942. Is there anyway I could use it with my system? :confused: I understand that 942 will not be able to receive Mpeg4, but I could still use the DVr function and probably some of Hi-Def channel too?

Assuming you also have Dish (you did not state whether you do or do not), yes you can incorporate the 942 into your system. However the only HD you will ever be able to get on it will by your local HD channels by way on using an OTA antenna. HBO and Sho may also be available if they are still mpeg2 (not sure on this at this point), but you will not be able to get any other HD channels.

There are still 5 MPEG 2 HD channels that Dish broadcasts and my 942 picks them up as well as the locals in HD via the OTA tuner.

Yes, but if OP does not already have HD pack, he cannnot activate the 942 for anything supplied via Dish Network.

basically my 942 will work as SD DVR,

Then my questions:
1. Can my 942 receive HD OTA and record them?

2. If I do have HD pack, my 942 can only receive ( & record)
whatever HD channels in mpeg2, is this correct?

Answers:
1 Yes, digital channels only. I think the 942 may also receive analog, but dvr will not work with them.
2, Some csr's may not active the mpeg2 channels even if you already have the HD pack or activate an mpeg4 receiver with it. If they do, dvr will work on them as well.
