I will get satellite TV soon from one of the two major services. What kind of setup do I need to be able to watch HD when available, yet be able to have it for long-term archiving when desired? (I realize this might mean DVD recording and will probably be SD.)
So do I need a dual SD/HD tuner? Can I convert HD to SD and then record it?
What are my options here?

The option as it now stands for the Dish 622/722 DVRs (to be expanded to SD DVRs also) is to record and archive those recordings on a standard external hard drive.
There is no option to record or transfer video files to your own recorder.
Presently, the recommended maximum capacity archival drive is 750GB.
I believe you are limited to 3 times to move recordings between the DVR and the ext. drive.
You can play or erase them from the archival drive, it is not necessary to bring them forward to the internal DVR drive again.
You can not change the type of recording (SD vs. HD) or manipulate them any different than the way you originally recorded them.
One exception, you can 'group' programs in the DVR now, and a software changed is planned to allow you to do the same in the archival drive.
You have to call Dish to initiate this feature. There is a one time $39 charge.
They will have your receiver authorized to receive the software. When you connect the drive (via USB only) just follow the messages on the screen.
