Hey all. Sorry if this is in the wrong sub forum but I wasn't sure where to post it.

I'm in the market for a DVD recorder and I want to set it up through my VIP622. Now my receiver is an Onkyo SR 701 with no HDMI outputs so I'm running the surround via component.

My question is what recorder would be a good one and should I should I get one with upconversion(not sure exactly what upconversion does)? Also will I need any other equipment I would need to record to the dvd recorder via my DVR?

Thanks in advance.

I recently got a Phillips DVDR3475 that I'm happy with from Walmart. I was concerned with how the pq would be because I had to use TV2's composite outputs to record on. I'm using it with my 722 which is virtually the same as your 622. The picture quality is great. It's NOT HD of course, but it's darn good. It is an "upconversion" unit. It upgrades the signal from 480p (standard DVD) to 1080i which is what HD is but its not true HD because of the source. The DVD's look great on both my older 65" Mitz (which doesn't have HDMI, so its only 480p) and my 42" Olevia which does have HDMI/1080i upconverted signal. The only other "equipment" you'll need are blank discs. The composite cables are included. Get DVD+R or DVD+ RW. The"+RW" discs can be recorded over and over, the "+R" are one use only. Hope this helps.

BTW, The Phillips was $114.xx on Walmart's website with free shipping to your local store. It was $128.xx in the store and they do not honor their website pricing. Since I have no patience I bent over and paid the extra $14, LOL.

Yer welcome bud. Something else I thought of. I have no HDMI input on my TV1 so I have to use component for HD and the RCA inputs for the audio unless I'm using my audio receiver for 5.1 via the optical out. That's the reason I chose to use the TV2 composite outputs to record on. If I could've used the HDMI with TV1 I would've recorded on that as well using the RCA audio outs and the S Video. The S Video is supposed to provide the best SD quality and there isn't one on the TV2 tuner. If you're able to use the HDMI for your TV1 you might want to use the TV1 tuner/S Video. The composite recording was very good, maybe S Video would be even better???

Hi

Brand new to the forum, but have been lurking for quite some time.

I have a panasonic dmr-ez47vk which is a dvd recorder and vcr combo. I like it very well. I have it hooked up to the 622 via s-video and the picture quality is excellent. Makes great copies of HD movies. I know it is not HD - but man it is pretty close. It was more expensive, seems like it was about $329 when I got it, but the combo was nice in that my wife has some video tapes she still likes to watch. This machine has a couple of features that I really, really like. First is the flexible record feature that lets you set the record time to anything you'd like up to 8 hours. So if a movie is 2 hours and 13 minutes, you set it to record 2:13 and it will fill the dvd keeping the picture quality as high as possible. It can also use RAM disc which allows for recording and chasing playback - similar to a dvr. Granted I don't use that feature as often now that I have the 622, but it is pretty slick. It also has a built in analog and digital tuner so I can record an OTA channel on it (although not true HD) at the same time as I record an ota on the 622 and watching another with the TV ota tuner while recording two sat programs all at the same time. If I only had time to watch all that stuff.

Heh Scotty, don't ferget ya could also watch something ya previously recorded on da 622 at the same time.:) Well, I guess ya'd havta switch back 'n forth between what ya were watchin' via the TV OTA tuner. Might get kinda confusin', LOL. :what:

Seriously, sounds like a great machine. Welcome aboard!
