Artifacts and blurriness at 1080i.

Hello.

I've just upgraded my TV from a generic 32" 720p to a 46" Toshiba Regza @1080p.

I'm using component cables for both my Dish 211 receiver and my Toshiba HD-DVD player.

The HD-DVD signal is sharp and crisp. The level of detail is stunning.

But, with the Dish 211, I see some blurriness and artifacting. In a sense, the image quality is not much different than upconverted 480p. (Which the Tosh does an excellent job at, I might add.) HD settings are off/1080i/16:9. I see this image degradation on all channels I've tested it on, but worse with some more than others.

I suspect that this issue has always been there, but it wasn't noticeable on the smaller screen.

Am I experiencing some technical issues with my satellite system or has the upgrade to a higher quality TV made evident compression or broadcast limitations? Or, could it be the component cable is the weak link in the chain?

Thanks!

Do you have Dish HD service? Are the problems you are experiencing on standard definition channels only? The component cable connection is not the weak link here.

My bad. This is with HD channels only.

The image is still quite presentable, but when compared to the HD-DVD there's a perceptible degradation.

Personally, I'm leaning toward compression issues. But I'd like to rule out my receiver.

BTW, I read your tag line. Too bad about DVD-A. Good thing my player also does SACDs.

Are there any particular channels that seem to have the problem or is it just the Dish HD channels in general?

Dish HD channels. And some look better than others. Some shows/channels appear only slightly not up to snuff while others look like nothing more than up converted 480p, despite the incoming signal being 1080i as indicated by the tv.

But, all will have some degree of fuzziness. I notice it most in facial features. Also, text and graphics in some shows will exhibit some softness or obvious jaggies around the edges while others appear tack sharp. I've not made note of which shows or channels, though.

It's difficult to pin down.

I would call Dish and express my displeasure with the picture. I'm sure you have already done this but I must ask - have you set the resolution on the 211 to 1080i?

I've noticed that some of the SD channels on dish look better than others for example the Disney channel looks almost as good as some of the HD channels. Likewise with the HD channels, channels like
Equator
RUSH
Treasure
Gallery
Rave
MHD
Food
HGTV
HDTHR
ANIMA
Monster-75/25
HDNEWS
GAMEP
FAMLY
Animal
Science
TLC
Discovery
Starz
Cinemax

All the above look absolutely amazing
All the below don't look quite as good

A&E
SHO-E
World
kung-fu-50/50
TBS

Most of the SD channels look pretty decent but some are a little fuzzy I guess. All of the HD channels are clear and definately look better than the SD but I do notice a little variance in pq on the hd.

Yes, I have.

Thanks for the assistance.

That is largely due to the channels/broadcasters themselves rather then Dish. I have noticed the same thing occasionally, with some programs looking worse or better than the one that preceded/followed it. And that has to do with the transfer process among other things.

Think perhaps it's explained by source material? Maybe they simply up rez existing SD shows and bless them off as HD?

There is a huge difference between local programming and digital SD channels. It's almost night and day. Some of these stations still look very good zoomed in to HD size.

Quite possibly. I use a rooftop antenna for my HD locals and the picture is amazing and better than Dish.
