whats the deal

so whats the deal with up conversion on the toshiba hd-a2? is it just me or does it not uc very well seems like my denon 557 does a much better job. was thinking of selling the denon but not so sure now. does anyone else think the uc sucks or am i crazy?

How do you have it connected? To upconvert you MUST use the HDMI connection. If using HDMi make sure you set the resolution to 1080i.


If you do not have an HDMI input on the display then you should be using the 3 wire component (Red/Green/Blue) cables to at least get the better 480p output.

thanks for help i do have it hooked up correctly.more or less just wondering if it is me or if anyone else agrees dont get me wrong the picture is good just doesnt seem as good as the denon i have,and this opinion only applies to the uc, hd dvds are excellent!

We loved the upconversion on our A2 mind you that was until we got the XA2 not that is is bad it is still wonderfull but the XA2 is just that much better.

It is very well done on 1st gen players, amazing there is still that much room for improvement.
Excellent feature though. J6P may be more impressed with what an XA2 or even A2 can do for his SD library than fully appreciate the difference in HD.

I am sure there are still a good number of consumers who fear their SD library is toast with the new HD players. Little do they know. But once they find out, the dollars start flowing. :)
And to think Toshiba was 'pioneering' (no pun intended) the best UC technology from the start for their format. Again, an excellent ploy.

I'm guessing you are talking about upscaling rather than upconversion. I have an A2 and it upscales significantly better than my TV and every bit as well as either my Oppo digital player or my Sony BD-S300 player. I find the best upscaled DVD's to be within 90 - 95% of the picture quality of HD. Sorry I have no experience with the Denon. If it is better than the A2 then certainly is impressive.

My XBOX 360 HD DVD player does a fine job upconverting DVD's along with my Toshiba HD DVD notebook. But nothing beats pure HD imo.
