Anyone own this TV? Your thoughts?

If Native Resolution (Number of Pixels) 1024 x 768 is enough for you, it is a fine TV. Most owners of 42" Panasonic Plasma sets I know are very pleased-- a few are dismayed the sets can not display 1280 X 720 HDTV.

I own a 50" Panasonic (1366 X 768) and I have been very pleased. If I were buying a new 42", I'd look at the PZ Series and get real HD.

Rick I am thinking of getting the same TV as you. They have it for 1550. Would you recommend it? How do you like it?

Real HD? 720 is certainly HD and it is not fake. IN fact, anything over 480 is considered HD.

Will I be happy going to this tv from a Sony 51" HD crt projection?

Everyone has told me that this plasma is better than the Philips LCD 1080p model I was looking at. I'm going 50".

I went to the store and compared and they both look similar so I don't know what I will like when i get home.

" IN fact, anything over 480 is considered HD.[/QUOTE]"

This statement is incorrect. A display must display a minnimum resolution of 1280x720 to be HD. A 1024x768 plasma is not technically HD.

Actually 576 is HD and is sometimes broadcast although it is an older HD format.

Real HD? 720 is certainly HD and it is not fake. IN fact, anything over 480 is considered HD.

So, you consider 352H X 576V resolution to be HD?

1280 X 720 for sure. 640 x 720 -- no way!!

There is MORE to HD than just 720 Vertical Lines of resolution. Horizontal resolution matters. True HD also has a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio (SQUARE) and a display aspect ratio of 16 X 9.

On a 16X9 display panel the following resolutions are SQUARE pixels: 1280 X 720, 1366 X 768, 1920 X 1080 (and others). If a panel has a resolution of 1024 X 768 and the panel is 16 X 9 the pixels are NOT square.

While the CES now allows TVs with 1024 X 768 that are 16X9 to be called HD-- they can NOT fully display a ASTC 1280 X 720 signal/image. It is ASTC who defines HD signals in the USA.

The computer monitor I am using right now is 1024 X 768-- it is not HD capable. Certainly many 42" Plasma TV's with just 1024 X 768 resolution have great picture quality-- far exceeding any EDTV-- but they are what they are . . .
