DISH NETWORK™ EXPANDS NATION’S LARGEST HD PACKAGE

More National HD Channels, More HD Regional Sports Networks

Englewood, Colo. – July 10, 2007 – EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) and its DISH NetworkTM satellite TV service today announced exciting enhancements to its industry-leading DishHD programming package.

On July 11, DISH Network will launch eight Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) in high definition (HD) that feature game-only baseball content, including Fox Sports Network Arizona (Ch. 365), Fox Sports Network Northwest (Ch. 376), Fox Sports Network Cincinnati (Ch. 377), Fox Sports Network Pittsburgh (Ch. 378), Fox Sports Network Detroit (Ch. 380), SportsTime Ohio (Ch. 381), Fox Sports Network North (Ch. 386), and SportsNet New York (DISH Network Ch. 388). With the launch of nine HD RSNs earlier this year, these new additions bring DISH Network’s total lineup of HD RSNs to 17, with more channel launches planned for Aug. 15.

Also on Aug. 15, DISH Network will add seven national HD channels to its DishHD programming package, including MHD, featuring music programming from MTV, VH1 and CMT; Golf/Versus HD; Animal Planet HD; The Science Channel HD; TLC HD; Discovery HD, and History HD, which will debut on Sept. 1. With these additions – plus more planned for mid-September – DishHD subscribers will continue to have access to the largest national HD lineup in the United States.

“No one currently has more national HD channels than DISH Network, and we’re committed to maintaining that edge by enhancing DishHD with channels that exemplify the top-quality programming our customers enjoy,” said Eric Sahl, senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network. “When it comes to high definition, DISH Network offers not only the best programming, but the best technology and value as well, including the only free HD DVR in the industry and, starting Aug. 15, six months of DishHD programming for free.”

DISH Network’s DishHD currently offers customers more than 200 hours per day of HD content from the nation’s top programmers and is a $20 add-on to digital definition programming packages, including the DishDVR Advantage. The HD RSNs are available to customers who subscribe to DISH Network’s America’s Top 100 Plus programming with DishHD.

The highly-acclaimed ViP622 DVR™ is the perfect complement to DISH Network’s extensive lineup of HD programming – and it’s free to new customers who qualify. One of the most advanced multi-room HD DVR receivers on the market today, the ViP622 DVR boasts the only true 30-second skip feature in the industry – allowing subscribers to watch television commercial-free.

Man this awesome!

I have grown tired of Direct TV fanboys quoting tvpredictions.com articles that go on and on about DTV's 100 HD channels and how they were rolling out many channels in September. I knew Dish had plans in the works and this announcement goes against how we usually find about new HD channels. Wake up one morning and we have a new channel like they did with A&E HD. I hope TBS HD is in the mix as well. I hope it's not too much to assume that Dish will aggressively pursue adding HD channels as they become available.

Does anyone know how many more HD channels they could fit with the current satellite situation? Dish is sending up additional satellites soon but it's fair to say that the one DTV just launched will be operational much sooner. I'm just wondering what Dish's capabilities are now?

As you can see from the press release they are saying more HD is planned for September. I would think this all puts them at their limit or we might start seeing HD Lite all over the place to save bandwidth. Sure MPEG-4 technology gives us more but even that has it's limits.

I would rather not getting too much more new HD channels right now until the new satellites are in place.

I wonder what these new HD channels will look like. Don't give me stretch-o-vision please. Some of these new channels are yet to be launched so who knows what to expect in the beginning.

Im a big history channel fan, but Im not real excited with this rollout of their historyhd version. Id like to think it will look good, but I doubt much of the programming will be remastered, and wont be done well if its done at all. May I eat my words.

I know TBS is planning on upconverting shows like Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond. I guess it depends on how and how well they do it. I think new programming will be filmed in HD so it should be better. I just hope it doesn't turn out like TNT, I am disappointed in the quality of much of their HD programming. Still better than the SD version though.

I know the press release doesn't mention TBS-HD, I am only doing so because I figure it fits with the mid-september launch. I just thought of something, TBS does some College Football games now! That will be great in HD!

I wouldnt be surprised. I know to go "platinum" (IE: all the hd you can get) you have to go mpeg4.

No, Discovery HD Theater is already "in place." Discovery HD is a HD simulcast of The Discovery Channel....so its a new HD channel (for us anyway).

It was reported that we will get 7 new national HD channels soon but remember..

1. All new channels will need an MPEG-4 receiver to be viewed. That 811 will just simply not do at all. As a matter of fact you will also loose all Voom channels on the 811 very soon. A ViP series receiver is a must.

2. You must be subscribed to the proper teir of channels to get all of them. Just the same as many of us do not currently get NGEO-HD because you must have AT-250+HD to get that. The new Golf/VersusHD channel falls into this same group and so does the Science Channel in HD. You also must have AT-200+HD at least to see Animal Planet in HD. AT-100+HD is good enough to see all the rest.

I'm actually looking at FoxSN Cincy and just see a Dish HDTV logo and boxing is on the SD feed. Do they actually play anything on the HD feed or is programming limited? Am I going to have to include both the SD and HD feed in my favorite program guide or will all programming be available on just the HD feed? Having both in my favorite list is annoying. Looking forward to the other new HD channels coming soon.

I watched the latest Charlie Chat, and they said they would be adding
these RSN's this summer and about 6 or 7 new hd channels prior to
the end of the year, and possibly as many as 20-40 in 2008. The
main reason they don't have them on now is because these channels
are not yet available. As soon as a new hd channel becomes available
Dish acquires it in its best resolutions possible, and gives them to us.
A lot will take place this coming year. I am looking forward to some
of these channels coming online Scifi, Hist, Tbs, Fox. This fall Dish
is adding hd locals to many of our regions. Thats a plus in my book.:yippee:

How do I find out if/when my locals will become HD?

If is not the word to use here. Just when and that is hard to say. That is considering you get your SD locals through Dish. It is forecast that 85% of the country will have HD locals by next year so the odds are good. Everybody else will just have to wait a bit longer but it will happen.

There is nothing out there that says when you will get your channels. When agreements are signed and the bandwidth is available, Dish will just turn them on.

You can keep checking www.dishchannelchart.com in the 6400's range to see what is happening at any given time but the keeper of the chart is not updating for the rest of the summer. I don't blame Tony. We all need a vacation.

Anybody who looks at that chart in the 6300's and 6400's will notice there are 2 blank spaces between DMA's. Future room for CW and MyTV? Could be. Only time will tell.

Consider an OTA antenna and you may be able to have your HD locals tomorrow. OK, maybe the day after that.

The Names of the packages since Feb 07..

Bronze=AT100+HD
Silver=AT200+HD
Gold=AT250+HD
Platnum=AT250+All movies packages+HD

Dish dropped the metal names and went with these names instead.

Be advised that next year the packages may be renamed again..

AT100+HD=Stoned
AT200+HD=Wasted
AT250+HD=Plastered
AT250+HD+All the movies=Coma

I really wish that INHD would go with Dish. I understand they are for cable, but they show some great classic movies on INHD movies. I just switched from local (small town, awful signals and dvr) to Dish with their newest DVR and I couldn't be happier. Now if they would only add local channels from Duluth in HD.

As far as InHD, Dish had this channel uplinked while trying to make a deal with them last year. That deal fell apart and the channel was never turned on. I can't tell you anything about your locals. Sorry.

Now I am starting to get news from a reliable source that the buzz is that TBS-HD and CNN-HD will be coming to Dish in mid-September. This is by no means official yet.

Of course TBS-HD is a must as this is where the baseball playoffs will be this year. I will report back as soon as I can get this confirmed.

I have yet to see my regional sports network FSN detroit HD (Channel 380) on line. Anyone know when this will be available? If it is already available I need to figure out why I'm not getting it!

From other posts, it sounds like other RSNs in HD are available. According to the original announcment on July 10th, FSN Detroit HD was included. When calling DISH they simply said it was not available.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know that is available. Now I just need to figure out why I'm not getting it! I've checked durring the last few HD broadcasts on FSN and channel 380 is not there.

When I got the high def package last year they insatlled a second dish as opposed to the single dish which is available. To get locals in HD I have to use OTA antenna. I'm not too famaliar with the types of dish satellite antennas available, but I wonder if this could be stopping me from getting the FSN HD broadcasts?

I can think of 2 reasons you are having a problem.

1. You may be using a "Favorites List" and 380 was not added to it. Go to "All Channels" or "All HD" and see if you can find it that way. If so, just add it to your favorites. Thats an easy fix and I hope thats your problem because reason 2 is a tricky one..

2. Where is that 2nd dish aimed? If it's pointing to 61.5 for Voom and some other HD, you have a problem, my friend. FSN Detroit is on the 129 bird. You will need to call Dish for a antenna upgrade or you might turn that antenna around to the south west.

Years ago Dish upgraded my antenna because many of my locals were on 61.5 so they added that to my Dish 500. There was no charge for that. As time went on the locals were migrated to 110 or 119 for me but HD's went up on 61.5 so I still need that one. I am in the north east and cannot see 129 at all.

If you get the HD package, that extra antenna must be aimed towards the south east. If they turn that around to the south west you will get all the same channels except the HD demo channel (9443 a.k.a. The Fish Channel) so they should do that for you. One more thing; 129 is kind of low in the south west sky. I hope you have a good view in that direction.

Thanks for the information. You are correct, the new dish they installed for HD is pointing south east. The original antenna is pointing south west. I'd like to add my 2 cents about new channels and I have a few concerns/questions. The last 2 days I have been researching D* and E* for the new HD channels. D* customer reps. says, and D* High Def forum users confirm, that the following channels will be available in HD around Sept 8-10:

The Science Channel
The Tennis Channel
The Weather Channel
TLC
Toon Disney
USA Network
Versus
2 unannounced Discovery Channels

NOTE: You don't have to get the most premium package to get these; they are available on most packages.

I can't get E* to inform me what the extra channels they are getting next month but from the replies in this thread, it sounds like it is going to be maybe next year before they get anything close to this line-up. I've been an E* customer for 6 years and would rather not change.

Question 1: I've heard SD on the HD receivers at D* is lousy. Is this true, because SD at E* may not be great, but I wouldn't say it is lousy?

Q2: I've heard D* has a better HD picture than E*, but don't they use MPEG4 compression also?

Concern: What about the litigation between E* and D* regarding the DVR technology? I know E* has countersued but this is costing E* the longer it drags out and if they lose, well it will cost even more so either way it will have to be passed along one way or another to the consumer, right?!

Also, the D* package that is comparable to the 200 package at E* is less expensive (and that includes the above HD channels!).

Any thoughts, comments, and suggestions are appreciated.

Some of those channels don't exist yet. Sci-Fi hasn't even announced plans for HD yet. Disney HD won't be up until 2008. There is no such thing as MTV in HD. It is called MHD and is a hybrid of MTV, VH-1 and CMT.

I wouldn't count the chickens before they hatched.

E* did have a setback with the distant networks but found a way around that. Their DVR technology is a little different than Tivo so that is why DVR's are still going. That whole thing will be settled soon.

Much could change by january when Im contract free. Ill go to where the programming is and Im assuming dish will add little more than the additional movie channels from hbo and the like. And sacrifice Equator and Treasury...are you crazy?

D* is Direct TV. E* is Dish (ala Echostar).
It can be confusing when they are not used consistently. I agree, I think it would be better if not used at all. I am never sure the poster is positive about which one he is using...sometimes they are not :)

'directv' 'dish' would work for me!

It has now been reported by testers that History Channel HD is now uplinked to channel 9491 on 61.5 and 129 but it is not available until September 1.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. All of you made good points. I plan to wait until mid-September to see if DirecTV carries all of these HD channels. Type A is right on...I have been waiting for channels like Scifi, Fx (have you seen some of the movies this channel has been broadcasting lately?!), USA, TBS to be shown in HD. I don't really care about the VOOM channels and I don't mean to speak for everyone, but their are a lot of people who feel the same when comparing these popular channels to VOOM. I also agree with Type A that I'm not convinced DISH is going to offer all of these channels in HD to everyone, or at least it will be a lot longer before they carry them all. So, it is DISH until mid-September, and then we will see what HD channels are available and what the 2 providers say.

By the way, isn't the HD and SD quality about the same between the 2 providers?

I forgot to mention before that although I have to pay for the 5 LNB HD-DVR receiver when I sign-up at DirecTV ($199), they have great special introductory offers: If you start off with their premium package, which is the HD-DVR package (195 channels) plus their NFL Sunday Ticket AND all the premium movie channels, it is 69.99/month for 4 months. You then have 3 choices: 1) keep the package and lose the movie channels and pay $59.99/month for 10 months, after which it goes back to the regular price of $69.99/month while keeping the NFL ticket all the time (thus saving $10/month for 10 months = $100). This $69.99 package with NFL ticket can be renewed the following year; 2) Or you can you can keep the movie channels and pay $99.99/month; 3) Or you can downgrade to the choice extra package (no NFL ticket) and pay $59.99/month. If you start out with the choice extra package, you pay $49.99/month for 10 months (again saving $100) and then pay regular $59.99/month.

VOOM was the original HD. I'm not giving up on VOOM.
WorldSportHD used to show live UEFA games.
Equator HD was like Discovery HD Theater if not better.
Beautiful girls on Ultra HD.
Rush HD has nice shows.
And all that in HD all the time. :hithere: :hithere:

I would really miss, out of VOOM: MONSTERS HD and FILM FESTIVAL, they have shown some movies (like Exodus) and great horror movies in true 1080 from 1080i transfers...hard to get good horror movies elsewhere with beautiful transfers that no one else has shown. I just put in DISH a month ago and couldn't be more happy. I did not want to pay 200.00 just to be able to "rent" a dvr, and I got the newer model dvr which is a dream, much better than Direct's I hear, and this one has more hours on it than any on the market.

Dish is certainly going to keep up to Directv, this is a huge battle, in its own way, the same as the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray battle. Each will do whatever it takes. The installer came to install and he is a huge audio-video nut and he said they already have the channels reserved and contracts are being signed right now (and he showed me Dish's printed list) to hook up over 100 more cities to local HD, and is making room to be able to handle over 100 additional national HD channels in the "near" future. I saw this on the DISH printout he had.

I do agree that the list of channels for Directv will not happen overnight. I think that list is what's coming and Directv will add them, just as I believe Dish will, the competition won't allow for either to be behind.

I am very happy with Dish. I have called a few times and got service on the phone within 3-4 minutes every time. I did not have a great experience with Direct tv in the year I had them, though some people do and some don't with either I guess.

Is there anyone here who is 60 miles away (or farther) from their local channels and is using an HD over-the-air antenna? I am considering this for now.He told me Duluth Minnesota is in the next round of HD local upgrades. He has always been a good friend and I believe what he says.

I'm in Virginia and receive my HD locals OTA from Washington DC at 70+ miles out. In my attic, I have a Channel Master 4228 UHF antenna and 7777 preamp. These two components have been proved to be about the best and are a must out in the fringe areas. I got both of mine for less than $130.00 to the door as I recall.

I get my info from a combination of several websites and a dealer friend who wishes to remain annonymous. I announce anything I find out here when it is credible enough to say. If it's not confirmed, I will mention that too.

One person I have to say I must check his stories out is Phillip Swan (Swanni Says). You got some of it right.

The most credible E* news online comes from Scott Greczkowski from satellite guys. Thanks Scott! :)

Also, thanks to Tony for keeping up on that great Dish channel chart!

There are more who do what they do and know who they are. Without them we would mostly be clueless. I don't mind doing the legwork and will always stop back here, where my HD experience started a few years ago, with the news.

What is so great about that list?!? :what:

I'm just curious as to what exactly in that list would make you switch to DirecTV?!? I just don't see much that Dish doesn't have already, and it seems to me that Dish has more HD channels right now than that list shows, so... why? :2cents

You're kidding right? What about Gallery HD, Ultra HD, and those very uninteresting HD channels that Dish has would make you say that Directv's new lineup is not worth it compared to Dish's?

Where is it written that Dish won't add the same channels as DTV? Dish may add some channels before, like MHD, AnimalPlanet, and Discovery were just added on Aug. 15th and some maybe after DTV does.

Everyone that supports DTV, keeps talking about all these channels like they will the only provider making them available. Dish has been way ahead for awhile and that's not even counting the Voom HD channels. If Dish does fall behind, it won't be for long.

I certainly hope that Dish isn't behind at all, with Directv showing this on their website (see link below), note that they say all of these channels by the end of the year. And here I just signed up with Dish because they had more. I have noticed that Dish has added channels faster than Directv, so maybe they will be keeping up. Just in case, I called Dish to find out what it would take to get out of my contract, and they want $13.33 per month for the remainder of the contract. I think I will give this until the end of the year and see what happens, and maybe it's worth my while to switch if the balance becomes severly uneven. I love the Dish service, great quality picture and HD dvr (the 622), plus now the ability to use external hard drives hooked up to the dvr, well that's a dream in itself. C'mon Dish, keep up and I will be very pleased! Oops can't yet post a link so it's the directv web site and their DIRECTV HD (located on left).

Dont worry Dish will keep up, it may not be right away but it will be soon, they have to or they will not be able to compete. I like dish for the Voom channels and there prices. I had directv and they kept raising their prices especially for the football packages.

I hope so, and I agree they have to. I also like the Voom, especially Monsters HD and Filmfest, some good stuff there! But some of the Voom is really junky too, and that counts for the number of high def channels they are touting. I want to stay with Dish because of their recent addition of external hard-drive capability for the hd-dvr, now that is awesome! Ordered my 750gb hard drive today (well, one for now hehe). I also had Directv and find the service with Dish is better, customer service is better, updates and new innovations are faster, and to me, and this is just me, their HD looks better, and their dvr is better, especially the 622.

Generally, the people who criticize VOOM the most are the people who have never had or never watched any of the VOOM channels. They echo what other's say instead of forming intelligent opinions based upon their own experience. Personally, I think VOOM is an excellent addition to any HD channel offering. All the people who scream for more and more channels should insist that their provider add VOOM networks. They can have 15 unique 24-hr HD channels now instead of waiting until some future unannounced date for new channels. The programming is very good and there might be a lot of repeats, however, there are repeats on most all other HD channels, so people who use this argument to support their position is bogus. Since Comcast picked up the VOOM networks, I am seeing more and more new programming added. The nice thing about VOOM is the programming is all HD unlike most of the newer channels that are added. Most of the content is a little HD and a lot of upconverted SD. I hope the people who keep demanding more and more HD channels aren't disappointed to find that HD isn't all it's hyped up to be. One provider is not better than the other. The provider who offers the HD channels that "I" want to watch, with the best picture quality at the best price will get my future business.

Thanks, mntwister for that info. I was going to wait until the 19th (the "supposed" day Directv is adding the new HD channels), then call DISH and tell them (probably a supervisor) that I'm a long time customer and do not want to switch but if they can't give me any type of prediction when DISH is going to add more HD channels like TBS, Fx, Sci-Fi, then I may just have to do it. I know many of these popular cable channels are mostly upconverted material, but it will be a better picture on channels that I watch anyway.

However, I may not switch now. I'll still go through motions to see what kind of response I get, but I may just go on and upgrade to the 622 and the new HD package. I'm sure you guys are correct when you say DISH has to keep up... I just hope it is not too long of a wait.

There is more to HD than football and baseball. Sunday Ticket is good for the diehard fan who watches any team or those that do not live in there favorite teams area. Home teams are already shown on local or blacked out for most.

I would hope Dish gets on the ball and gets EI next year. I still don't understand why they didn't... most cable companies like TW ended up with it.

Plus, DTV airs many of the Red Sox games in HD, and next year almost all of them will be in HD.

Credit for above info to digiblur over at the satelliteguys site

Some were busy today, but it wasn't at D* :D

Are you one of those that pokes fun at others misfortunes?

DTV never said yesterday was the launch date, that was internet speculation. (and poor speculation at that)

DTV has maintained by the end of the month "some" of the new channels will start popping out, with the remainder of what they currently have under contract in October (again no date).

But back to my first line... do people on here really rag on other people's services? Thats pretty lame.

Not really to rag, just poking a little fun.

If you examine everything being talked about on any D* forum board, you will find that everyone is saying that D* CSR's have been saying some of the new channels will be on by the 19th for over a week. Now nobody knows what to say.

Who knows what is true, they never told me that. In fact, when I call in, all they have ever told me is by the end of the month.

I don't know why the DTV boards are going so crazy. We all knew when we got DTV they were behind the HD 8 ball.
