I just bought a DLP 56 Samsung slim. I currently dont have the HDTV reciever or package. The picture is crappy and my wife is questioning me on the reason I spent so much. I hook up the coponent cables and it helped out a little. Will the quality of the the standard signal increase dramatically with the HD reciever on a standard channel? Thanks guys my wife is nagging and Im about to throw her into the tv, just kiddin!

Make sure in the tv mebu you have it set for widescreen(16x9) and you can also hook up an antenna to see if it will pick-up hd locals.

Does your TV have a digital tuner?
Model number?
Do you have Dish Network, Direct, or cable?
Receiver type?
Do you have an antenna in your attic or on the roof?

Blowing up a 480i (analog TV) picture to a large screen reveals all the pimples of analog TV. It looks good on a 19" TV and crummy on a big screen.
Have her set further back, like 20'.
I think if You can get an HD signal, either with the digital tuner in the HDTV or with a set top box of some type, you'll stop watching most SDTV and be fascinated by the "looking through a window" effect of HDTV.

What is your zipcode? You may have free HD available right where you are.

the S-Video connection for video? S-Video is considered a step up from composite (RCA-red/white-sound, yellow-video) cables. The S-video will take the place of the yellow cable and you need to make sure you're on the correct input on your TV. (You mention having hooked up to component cables, but, just to make sure, you're talking about composite (red/white/yellow), correct?)
Check your settings and enhancements. If you're still using composite cables, have the Comb filter ON. With S-Video, Comb filter shouldn't matter. Check your contrast. If it is still at 100, knock it down. Most TV's look better nearer 50. Also check your DNIe settings, Detail Enhancer, etc. If these have different settings, check them out. Turn them off and on and see what they look like on a couple of different channels.
Last, you should be sitting no closer than about 8' from your TV.
And, depending on where you live, you could receive broadcast HD using only rabbit ears or indoor antenna. You might need a larger attic or roof antenna.
Are you within 60 miles of a large metropolitan area?
City and zip?

Thanks for the replies. I do live close to the metro area and read about receiving hdtv with rabbit antennas. Now i wish I didn't throw those old things away:) .
After trying your suggestions I was blown away by the picture quality. My wife who was nagging that I should have not wasted our money because the old regular tube tv looked clearer, after watching a movie in blu ray she was in awwh. She told me that she noticed dust on cars, crumbs on tables, and many other details. Thanks guys now the old lady can start doing some of this    :gamer :music  .
What settings do you Samsung DLP owners use? Thanks
