HD not working

I just switched from cable with HD to Dish Network with HD. I have the VIP 211 receiver and my tv is a Panasonic 47 inch crt. So far the picture on SD dish is much better than cable. The problem is that SD dish and HD dish look the exact same. I went into the HDTV settings on the receiver and changed to 1080i and it still looks the same as before I changed it. I can switch back and forth between espn HD and SD espn during a show that I know is in HD such as Sportscenter and it looks the exact same. I have also tried to do this with all the other channels and the HD looks the exact same as the SD channel. I checked all the cords on the TV and the receiver and they hooked everything up properly. Also when using the format button on the remote, if I change the SD zoom then the picture changes, but when I cycle through the HD options graybar, normal, zoon etc.. all look the same and nothing on the screen changes. I have also held down the power button to reset the receiver. Emailed dish over a day ago but haven't gotten a response. Any ideas?

Thanks

What type of connection do you have between the receiver and the display?

If can't tell the diff between SD and HD, something is definately wrong.. As jim mentioned, how is it connected up (component or HDMI). On HD stations, what does the display show it is broadcasting at (480i or 1080i). Just hit display or info on your TV remote.

It is hooked up using comp cables and I've double checked to make sure they are properly plugged into both the tv and receiver. When I hit info on the sat remote it doesn't say anything about what it's broadcasting in. I'll mess around with it more to see if I can get it to tell me what it's broadcasting in.

By "comp" I wil assume you mean component (red, green and blue). You can also use your TV remote to see the output info displayed. It is usually info or display button or someting like that.. Also, what is the model of your RP CRT???

Yeah thats what I meant by comp. Model number is PT-47WX54. I also went through all the buttons on my TV remote and there is nothing that will tell me what the broadcast is being shown in.

Some Features:

Progressive Cinema Scan (3:2 pulldown)
Enhanced Progressive Scan Doubler helps remove distracting horizontal scan lines

Horizontal and vertical edge correction sharpens the edges of objects in the picture for extra-sharp viewing enjoyment

Digital comb filter minimizes any "hanging dots" in the image for pure, brilliant color

HDTV/EDTV display capability (1080i, 480p) lets you view high-definition or enhanced-definition TV from an external ATSC receiver (not included)

Features a width-to-height ratio similar to movie theater screens, enabling full-screen viewing of high-definition broadcasts and DVDs produced in 16:9 format
Color Temperature Control allows you to adjust the white balance to your preference
Color Matrix Adjustment
Wideband Video Amplifier
Convenience Features:
181-channel NTSC tuner
Auto Power On
Auto Programmable Scan
Built-in closed caption decoder
Channel labeling with 48 preset labels
3-channel search
Clock and sleep timer
Favorite channel scan
Game Guard (GG)
Video Picture Memory (Std, Cinema, Vivid)
Connections:
4 A/V input jacks (3 rear/1 front)
3 S-Video Inputs (2 rear/1 front)
2 component video inputs
DVI Digital Interface
A/V program out jacks
Stereo audio output jacks - fixed and variable
2 UHF/VHF 75-ohm inputs

Any ideas? Dish Network refuses to answer their email so I guess I'll have to call them.

Did the installer also hook up coaxial cable to the TV? If you were watching satellite on your TV's channel 3, this would be the case. You would need to make sure that you are on the correct input on your TV.
The 211 does have a coax out.

The other thing that I would expect, would be settings or enhancements on your TV. I have visited a number of homes where, after correcting the HD setting to 1080i, and making sure that component cables (or preferably HDMI) cables were connected, I was disappointed when I went to see some of Dish's great HD content.
I know what to expect and when the HD doesn't make me say "WOW", I'm not finished.

I would do/check the things listed here:
http://www.wowvision.tv/main.htm
Then, if none of these things has made appreciable difference, (and even if they have) you should consider a professional ISF certified calibration.
Hope you get your "WOW!"!

Your RGB component cable is plugged into the bottom set of RCA plugs on the back of the 211, right?

Make sure there are NO other video lines from the receiver to the TV. You should have only the three component bundle and either a two cable bundle for stereo audio or an optical cable for audio.

The 211 could be outputting component, s-video and composite and if all are connected, maybe the component or s-video is what the TV is set to see.

Highdefjeff got it. I can't believe I didn't think of that they had it on channel 3 when they were done setting it up and I just never changed it from there and tried the video setting. Thanks.

What is an RGB plug? And do I need one?
I have a 211 HD receiver and have the HDMI cord going from it to the tv. Still, the HD picture does'nt look that sharp.I have the receiver set to 1080i.Is there something more I can do to make this an outstanding HD picture? Adding the RGB for instance or S-Video to enhance the HD picture?

RGB is color code for Component. If you are using HDMI, you don't need it unless you want to run the same HD programs on two HD tv's at the same time.

Can I run the S-Video and the HDMI from my 211 receiver..and use the s-video for my regular digital channels or can I use it for high def channels if I don't use the HDMI ?

Yes, you can. The HD channels would look better on the components than on the s-video. The sd depends on how your tv handles the s-video (there have been many posts on how bad some HD tv's handle the s-video). If sd looks very good via the HDMI, component should look almost as good.

Rgb from 211 direct to TV input
