VIP 622 Reset Problem

So I have been having minor issues with reception ever since I got the 622 about 2 months ago. But now in the last two weeks a new issue has arisen. When I'm watching TV my receiver will on its own power off. It will then not respond to any commands through the remote or on the receiver itself. It will eventually go through a reset cycle and the picture will come back after 10-15 minutes. But then the receiver will on its own power down again and will not respond to any commands after only several minutes. I've tried using different outlets, different surge protectors, and bypassing surge protectors altogether, nothing seems to work. I didn't have this problem at all with my previous SD dish dual tuner receiver, and it has only come up in the last two weeks with the VIP 622. This has been happening without pause for the last two weeks. I haven't even been able to watch a 30 minute TV show without having problems. Should I have a tech come out? Should I replace the receiver?

Thanks.

Replace the receiver.

One is on the way in 3-5 days. Must be a bad piece of hardware or a software malfunction. I've essentially been without dish for two weeks now so they are going to refund me for the lost time.

Mine did the same thing. I figured out it was overheating. The 622 is notorious for overheating. I fixed the problem by giving it more space and adding two extra fans underneath it. Works great, no problems.

Mine just started doing this over the last couple of days. On the Dish Network portal site it said to try plugging directly into the wall. The opening post tried this but did not work, I'll try and see how it goes. I did order a fan so maybe that will help if overheating is the problem. I'm thinking maybe dust or something has gotten into the casing causing it to overheat more frequently. This whole rebooting thing happened a couple of times since I've had this until but now it happens at least three or four times a day. We have to unplug the unit for about 10-15 minutes for it to finally come back on.

Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

I found that the main issue was that the receiver was getting too hot. I separated the receiver onto its own level on the tv stand and didn't have any further issues.

Thanks, I'm glad you discovered the source of your issue. Hopefully the fan I ordered will help. Yesterday I unplugged the receiver, waited a few minutes and actually vacuumed the grilled left side to suck out any dust that might be in there. You know what? It didn't happen again all day long which has not been the norm.

Well got my fan set up but so far it isn't helping. This isn't looking good. My wife is going to be po'd if we have to get a new unit.

The best working cooling solution for the 622/722 so far has been a laptop computer fan (usually has 2 fans in it) placed beneath the 622/722 as it blows upward it really helps keeps things cool and the ones I have seen in use are USB powered so no worries as the 622 does have an available port.

I have a thermal cooling fan placed on the left side of the unit and I just moved it to a new location so hopefully it will cool things off enough where I don't have to use the new receiver they are sending me.

I chose this fan because I read on an earlier thread most people felt it was more effective than a laptop cooler. Who knows? My average Hard Drive temperature is down to 116 from 125 so that's good.

Hi all, I have had the same problem with my 622, but I have had it for about 2 months and it has only done it like 3 times. But I had the same problem with the old receiver that I had before I upgraded. That one did it much more frequently but was still only like once a week or so. I just figured it was a glitch in the software and lived with it but I understand if you can't even watch a half hour without a problem, that stinks! have a good day all.

Since this is a known issue to Dish, I can't figure out why they or JVC (the manufacturer) doesn't find a better cooling solution and possibly an add-on for current models.

My 622 keeps rebooting itself. It won't play for more than about 5 minutes. Tech support at Dish says it's a grounding problem. I've got a tech coming out to look. Mine probably isn't an overheating problem. It was doing the powering down and rebooting thing right out of the box.

Sounds like a bad 622.

I'm having the same problem. I tried all the suggestions made by Dish Network Support and even replaced the receiver without improvement. This is ridiculous! Dish's claim to the best DVR just doesn't hold water. Can't wait until my contract is up so I can switch to Direct-TV!

Should have mentioned in my post above that I have a 722 (not a 622)... :error

I've had this happen twice. Once to my original 622 back in July 2008 and now to the replacement in Sept 2008.

I did some checking on the dishnetwork support site and found a link talking about software updates. I suspected it was a software update because each time it started rebooting in the middle of the night when a software update would usually be pushed out.

I found the link showing the current list of software for each receiver. It's now been updated but when I first looked at it the current software for the VIP622 was L5.14 (or something in the L5 range). That update happened back in July. The same time my first 622 started rebooting. During one of the times I could get my current receiver stable I checked the system info and saw that it was at L614. The link above shows that this was pushed out around 9/19/2008, around the time it started rebooting again.

I'm working to install another replacement. Dish Network gave me the ability to copy my programs to an external drive and waved the $39.99 fee since this happened twice and I've been a customer for years. (You gotta talk nice to customer support. ;-) ) As soon as I get a bigger hard drive and hopefully keep the receiver up long enough to copy things off, I'll copy my shows down to the new one.

I have 2-622 receivers since 12/10/08 and have replaced them twice and now one of my 622's is reseting again so that will be the 3rd time that will be replaced.

I too was given the ground, surge protector, house current is bad, excuses as well as them making me feel like it is my fault.

I don't see that reset button on the bottom that someone mentioned on my 622's. When I try to power on this now bad a 3rd time 622, it won't even get to displaying the x of 5 menu progress screens. Just goes back to reseting again with fan noise. I have a digital voltage meter and I see 119.5 to 120.3 volts on the outlet.

Dish told me the range has to be 110 to 120. So, I am good there. I don't think I have a heat issue since this 622 is on a glass shelf on its own and the unit is not hot to the touch.

I do agree though that they do get hot when in a confined area, like near 100 degrees. The manual you get states that it can handle 113.
Ya, right.

JVC has an issue here and hopefully they will fix. I have filed a complaint with the BBB, so we will see what happens there. Dish is an accredited BBB business with a "B" rating so that should help a little.

My advice, stay as far away from Dish as possible.

That's the best location for a fan IMO. Strangely enough, I replaced my TV stand recently, and did not bother using the fan again. For the last few weeks I've had zero problems. No reason for the 622 to be any cooler in this stand than is was in the other...even though this stand LOOKS cooler! :D
