VIP 622 Running Hot

Had the unit almost a year now. 2 of the last three days when I turn the unit on, about 5pm, it gives a message about being to hot to run. Temp was 179 and 172. I ran a fan for about 10 minutes and it worked fine. Nothing has changed and it is still housed in the same spot it has been. Weather is warmer but not that warm. House temperature last time was 73. Anyone experienced this issue?

Since you had your 622 for a year now, it may be a bit dusty inside. Dust build up on heatsinks and fans can cause a significant decrease in airflow and increase in temps. Not saying that is the cause here, but can be. If the case/exaust fan has any debre on it I would clean it along the blades. Taking the case off and cleaning it will probably kill your warranty/exchange, so I would not go there unless you have to.

The DVR must have lots of clearance all around, especially the top and left side.
Some have used a laptop cooler to help lower the heat.
But since little air can be pulled through the bottom, not sure how much that helps. But some claim they have seen a drop.
Keep in mind, the cheapest or worst laptop cooler do virtually nothing to cool a laptop, so choose wisely if you go that course.

Understand about what it needs just strange same spot, under same conditions for a year and no problems. Will check about the cleaning issue. Anyone ever clean one of these units?

I haven't and likely because of breaking a seal. Might not be as big a deal if you are not leasing. So if you are leasing, don't worry about it.
Just keep it ventilated and maybe with a vacuum you can suck some dust out of the case. Beyond that ask for a new one if it goes belly up.

If it's getting that hot, the internal fan may have failed, do you hear it ramp up at these high temps?

That was it. Just called Dish and they are sending me a replacement. Now I have to watch 24 plus hours of shows before the replacement arrives. No way to transfer my recorded shows. Good thing I am retired.

After drilling multiple 1 in. holes in the back of my cabinet, raising the 622 on 1/2 in. risers, and leaving the glass door ajar, mine has stopped overheating. And yes, my fan is working. I've never seen a component have that much of a heat issue.

I did the same and added a square USB powered muffin fan to add even more air circulation. Using the available USB port for the fan makes it a snap to do.
