Just a note to say that is was announced on this past Monday's Charlie Chat that all Voom channels will go MPEG-4 by August 15th.
You will then need a ViP series tuner to see any of them.
Charlie also said that there will be about 6 more National HD channels launching by the end of this year but declined to name what they will be.
I suppose by migrating more channels to MPEG-4, that will free up bandwidth that will be needed to do this with their current capacity.
The capacity however, will increase greatly in December with the scheduled launch of 2 more satellites. Dish will then have the capacity for 200 HD national channels and HD locals to 80% of the country.
Expect many new HD channels in 2008.
All of this was stated on the Charlie Chat.

What does that mean? Will it in theory improve picture quality?

It means some will have to take the free 622/18mo commit upgrade to continure to get Voom. This also will require the AT100 which will make some Family subs mad.
What it means for us HD nuts is more capacity for the 6-8 they have stated theyll add by end of 2007.

Just means you should see no drop in quality as they squeeze in even more channels. At least that's the intent.

Should we speculate as to what those 6 HD channels could be?

I also saw something about a new forthcoming Smithsonian HD only channel that Charlie might be interested in.
I'll bet that ends up in the top tier (AT-250+HD) with National Geographic.
No need to speculate. Eventually all the HD will be here.
The only question that remains is who gets what and how many the fastest.
My guess is that D* might just pull ahead in content for just a few months over this coming fall and winter but then E* comes right on back by this time next summer. Could be sooner.

Millitary channel just recently duplicated to channel 283...not sure if its just some free time to promote the channel (but usually thats made apparent on the same channel by the ad to sign up for the channel that replaces the program description), or if it means that will be the new location for the hd version of the millitary channel.

The 280's through 298 are the free previews available to AT-100 people and up for a month. Thats all that is. They will be different next month.

I wish they would use that HD preview channel for something more than a HD fishbowl since we are talking about new/ more HD channels.

It's free, so they use it to try to 'wow' potential customers who can see HD on their TVs. Just makes me want to go to Landry's (if we had one).

You got to love that Landry's fish tank. It looks beautiful and it's maintenence free.
No cleaning, feeding, replacing the dead fish, no buying new fish, etc..
Not a bad deal at all.. lol

I just read in another forum that Voom will become available to Cablevision subscribers in just a few more days.
This might be a good thing. Cablevision will add it to their basic HD package. I wonder how many additional viewers this equates to. It has to be millions.
This might mean that we will see lots of new programming and less repeats. I hope.
