Dark display on Sylvania 32" HDTV

The picture of my Sylvania 32" HDTV tends to be somewhat dark, i.e. it is difficult to detect shadings in dark parts of the picture. E.g. if person is wearing a dark suit, you can't see creases in material whereas they can be made out on my SDTV. Tried both brightness and contrast settings at highest values and that didn't work, nor did THX calibration.
Any suggestions. Might it be that HDTVs generally produce darker displays?

LCD displays can have this type of problem in dark gray areas of the picture. My Sharp Aquos has similar issues, but my older Zenith CRT HD is fine.
