http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/25/soft-ps3-sales-spell-trouble-for-ea-others/

Who's on the PS3's side, who? Lots. Historically speaking, brand PlayStation has had the best third-party support over any other platform. That's what happens when your first two consoles sell bajillions. A higher install base means more sales of games and a better chance for game developers to make money. So given such strong support for PlayStation systems in general, it's no surprise that EA and others were/are heavy backers of the PS3 from the start.

But according to Bank of America, soft PS3 sales not only spell trouble for Sony but for the many third-party publishers supporting the platform, namely EA. Based on recent channel checks at 50 stores, 78% had PS3s in stock. Hence, "disappointing PS3 hardware sales are an incremental negative for all the game publishers." So much, in fact, that 2007 publisher stocks could take a substantial dive this year as 21% of their total expected revenues were pinned on the PS3.

As you can imagine, continued blame for the low demand was placed on the PS3's price point and and "lack of compelling software titles." The take-away: unless PS3 demand increases in lieu of early mishaps, publishers could also be left in the cold. Maybe more than just gamers are rooting for early price cuts now. The pressure's on.

this is really bad news for sony and could definetly lead to a price cut already but i dont know if sony could handle one right now. wow, 78% is alot more then i ever thought so heads are gonna start rolling if things dont pick up in a hurry. hey jimmy and nexgenrulz maybe you should pull out your company stock before it crashes.

The problem is the ratio of PS3 to PS3 games too low. While EA got hurt but most of their PS3 games were multiplatform. Namco (or another japanese developer) is the company that got really hurt since they released a few (crappy) exclusives at PS3 launch which caused them to say they need to sell 500K games on PS3 just to break even.

agree, though i still cant leave out the fact of how horrible the PS2 launch was and the games THAT system came out with on launch. does anyone remember driving emotion type-s... yea it was that bad!

i still think in time as the better games start to come out that the console will then start to sell. that wont be for another few months though. At least when the system launches in EURO there will be some much nicer titles available(motorstorm, F1 championship edition, sonic, rainbow six etc..)

Yeah PS2 launch was terrible. What was that fireworks game..fantavision or something? I didn't buy one until the GT3/PS2 bundle came out.

Just imagine how impressed you would have been with the XBOX - superior hardware, better audio support (standard DD 5.1 in-game) and, of course, Halo. I speak from experience, having transitioned from a PS2 to an XBOX myself a several years ago.

sadly im the type of person that only likes to have one console. PS1.. then got rid of it and got Dreamcast:bowdown: , got rid of that one and shortly after got PS2, i was enjoying PS2 so much i wasnt going to get rid of it for a xbox. at the time i knew very little about this massive overly sized ugly looking black box with a giant X on it and coming from a company that makes Windows? i was like "HUH!" so no i never gave it a try and i dont regret that i didnt.

So you really judge a console based on how it looks, rather than how it performs, huh? Wow. Your loss. You missed out, as the XBOX was far superior to the PS2 in terms of graphics, audio, and (imo) game selection. The PS2 may have had more games, but I enjoyed the XBOX games much more than the PS2 games (that I still have, stuffed in a box somewhere.)

There are only two PS franchises that I would wish to be released for the 360: Tekken and Metal Gear. Since Metal Gear 2 was eventually released for the XBOX (with additional features,) I can wait it out. If it never happens, that's okay. As for Tekken, I'll live if it never makes it to the 360. Other than that, I've been very happy with my choice of supporting "the company that makes Windows." Happier than I was when I was supporting the company that inflicts rootkits on its unsuspecting customers. YMMV.

Really? I must be in the minority, but I loved the original Duke controller. Most of my friends liked the "S" version (aka the smaller version) better, but I always liked the layout and feel of the Duke.

The 360 wireless controller is the best controller I've ever used, hands down. It's not even close, imo.

Sonic was a horrible game. I can't believe Sega keeps ruining some of their best franchises. If I wasn't keeping Sonic just to collect it(i've been a huge Sonic fan in the past), I probably would have sold it 1 week after buying it.

yup, i love the PS3 look, oooohhh sooo shiny. my wife on the other hand thinks its the most ugliest thing shes ever seen LOL!!!!!! but i also like the 360 style too.. way better then the original 360. when the PS2 first debut i wasnt to sure what to think of it? it looked like a tall book or something or a car amp lol. the slim PS2 is nicer. i can see sony makeing the PS3 into a smaller size like they did with the PS1 and PS2 after afew years.

Yeah, I never got an Original xbox either, when I played other people's I absolutely HATED it. The graphics were better and the HDD support was pretty sweet, but the controller was just too much for me to get around, it basically ruined the whole system for me.

They fixed the controller with the S controller. Everyone makes mistakes. I had the Dreamcast, and then waited it out for the XBOX, passed on the PS2. When I played on my friends PS2, I was really glad I waited. I really felt the Xbox was a much better system. The Dreamcast kept me going until the XBOX was released. DC was a great system also, just never really caught on. The online gaming for the DC really got me into the whole multi player thing, and really opened the door for Xbox live.
I would also love to see the Tekken series come out for the 360. Could really care less about the Metal Gear series. I guess I am one of the few that doesn't like it.

mmmmmm.....Metal Gear:bowdown: . I hate to admit it but I love them games. Snake Eater was probably the most innovative game I played on the PS2...never before did that type of game feel open,no directions to steer ya around...just you,the map and enemies.

All hail.. metal gear.. all hail.. metal gear...

i have to say MGS3 was indeed the best one.. that one was truly insane, no radar so you had no idea where the enemies where.. almost no hiding since you had to use camouflage to hide and blend in with the environment.. *begins to drool*

Yea man...my boys always laugh cause I love MG but actually never really got into Halo. Metal Gear could help me purchase a PS3...is there any kinda release date idea yet?

EddieDZ

the only release date we know of is "2007"(as shown in numerous trailers) thats of course without any delay. more then likely though it will be Q4 2007 as stated on IGN, but then again IGN dates suck sometimes too. if MGS4 does make it in time for a Q4 2007 im going to be in a huge delima as Assassins Creed is due in Q4 2007 also so i wouldnt one which one to get first :(.

I was a PS2 fanboy for quite some time...until I found an Xbox bundled with Morrowind in a pawn shop for 100 bux. This was the end of my Ps2 era... I still picked up the ocasional exclusive title or 2. But the graphics and Riddick were all it took to make me and Xbox1 fanboy 4 life. Oh dont get me wrong. I cant stand Mi*ros*ft. But you gotta love J. A.'s stategy with the 360. Ill never stop loving my xbox1 w/ Xbox Media Center in 720p.. even if it is outdated hardware, I still get more use outta my xbox1 on my home theatre network than any other console or device..and I have em all. (Except the PS3) I'd get one if they were cheaper, thats 4 sure. Well sorry for rambling I just couldnt resist putting in a couple of cents worth...

cheers
