Friend looked at getting OTA for new Direct TV hook up...was told by tech to wait until January for potential HD locals:eek:

What does the tech know???? Will Dish let Direct TV beat them to the punch...

I am sure these rumors are everywhere, but next wave of upgrades seem likely sooner than later...

Directv is already beating Dish to the punch in ALOT of areas when it comes to HD locals...so I wouldn't be surprised if they are avail in Buffalo in the new few coming weeks. D* is also claiming another capacity for another 40 hd national channels by the middle of 07...and I think quite a few of those will be sports channels avail nationwide. I know right now they offer YES in HD for the New York City market, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was avail nationally by the middle of next year.....IF YES is offering nationally avail programming in HD. Otherwise it could be other channels...D* is saying that they will have the capacity for 1500 hd locals...which just about covers every local channel across the country.

If you can, put up an antenna for HD locals.

I know our leaders in Congress make the decisions that best serves the consumers  but, what a waste of bandwidth to provide SD locals and now HD locals in so many markets. DBS providers should be allowed to offer distant network channels to ANYONE who wants them instead of all the duplicated local channels which carry, for the most part, the same programming . Then the bandwidth can be used to offer even more HD national and sports channels. It's unfortunate that money and special interests drive congressional decisions.

I hope Dish come up with some decent HD channels because I am tired of watching some crappy Voom HD channels...I would die to see channels like USA Network HD, FX HD, SciFi HD, Spike HD...But I guess it is too much to ask...

I agree on your some of your selections especially SciFi, but find NGHD, DSCHD, WSPOR, far from crappy and very enjoyable.
And thanks to UNIHD, HDMV, HDNET, and a couple of others have enjoyed some older movies in HD that are stretched on TNT.
Plus, HDNET has a wide variety of interesting shows, some mindless ones but others are movies and sports specials like boxing you don't see elsewhere, especially live and in HD. Plus, they show some older mini-series that I missed on HBO or SHO before.
I have caught NFL games on NFLHD that were not shown on locals.
Against all the numerous standard Dish channels I never did watch, I think it's a fairly balanced variety of HD programming with some being exceptional, and ones you can't find anywhere else. Of course, you can improve on anything, but considering the wide variety of tastes they have to satisfy, I think it's a pretty good assortment.

You re right, Daleb...I said some of the Voom channels, not all... Like I said, I wish some of the big networks (not syndicated tv) would start showing HD content like TNT, ESPN, Discovery...

DISH has the largest HD lineup of any provider. If you went with someone else then you would get even less HD.

You're forgetting something very important - the only reason why these stations exist is to make money. Money made from advertising. That's the whole basis behind must carry rules and blackouts in certain markets. I agree that it makes absolutely no sense to black out the tv station for St. Louis in Boston while a hockey game is on - what Boston fan would care about listening to the St Louis homies? But because the potential is there for someone to tune to that other channel, the local station needs an edge that they can turn to advertisers and guarantee that should someone want to watch that game, they can only do so on that one local station.

I can't see that changing anytime in the future, short of there being another way to gather revenue for a station.

I would like E* to turn on the HD RSN's. D* has them and so does my local cable company. And whats up with those HD NHL Center Ice Channels (ch. 387-393) that have been uplinked ?
