General SD Issues

There are many threads referring to SD quality. I like many have been disappointed when first getting into the HD TV's and noticing SD PQ issues.

The following link is from an article two years ago, but still very informative.

All I can mention is my experience with the TV's I have/had.

My first was the Panasonic 42" EDTV monitor purchased last December from Costco. SD quality for all local thru dish (942 DVR receiver) was OK, but noticeably different from my Sony Wega. The digital stations on the dish were better than the analog ones. Some digital were very good (Science, History, Discover (not the HD discover), and others.

I was somewhat concerned when upgrading to the Panasonic TH-50PX60U that because of having to upscale more it might make the SD quality worse. It's actually better. I now also use an OTA for my local channels in HD.

In many articles I've read recently there is mention of the quality of the upscaler and how this can help improve PQ of SD programs. These articles list this as one of the differences between 1st tier manufacturers and others. And maybe they keep getting better at it.

But, as the article above makes clear, there are many issues why SD PQ can be less than desired.
