Hello all,
I am new to this forum and I hope you can help me.
My Samsung supports 720p and 1080i and the VIP211 can output at 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i.
Now I know that different networks broadcast at different format (ABC - 720p, NBC- 1080i)
My question is:
Do I need to change the VIP211 output format for each channel I use? Like when I watch ABC put it on 720p and when I watch NBC put it on 1080i?
Please help.
Thank you,
Ofir

If we watch an HDTV broadcast off air without the aid of Dish Local feed there is nothing you can do to set the format since the Samsung gives you the picture as it is received. Samsung has told me the format options available through the Dish setup make no difference either; the tv accepts the format as received.

use the format buttom on your dish remote ,bottom left
This will change format for Hd or SD that will work on any receiver
Thank you

i'll try to be more clear.
What i mean is:
Do i need to change the HDTV setup menu (in my dish reciever) from 720p to 1080i when i am changing channels from ABC(720p) to NBC(1080i)?

Presuming your Samsung is like my Sharp, you set the highest resolution the unit will accept in the TV setup menus. Usually, this should be 1080i. Set the 211 also to 1080i. I understand that there may be a reason to set your TV to 720p, but that it is a solution to certain incompatibilities between some equipment, and may not be a problem here.
Anyway, this allows the 211 to send on anything it recieves in 1080i to the TV at 1080i. Anything recieves 720p gets converted to 1080i. And anything it recives in 480 (SD) is converted to 1080i... Now, if your set is native 720p like my Sharp is (1366x768), there might be some debate as to whether you're getting the best possible picture when receiving a 720p signal, as you've got the signal going 720p-1080i-720p. Even though it's digital, there could be some artifacts or other problems introduced in the conversions. That's just conjecture on my part, and not a statement of fact.
In short, set the TV to accept 1080i, and the 211 to output 1080i, and sit back, and enjoy!

So i wonder whats happening when i watch NBC (that broadcast in 1080i) ?

If the 211 is like the 622 in this regard, you set it to output either 1080i or 720p. I tried both to see which gave me the best picture and use that setting.

If the 211 is set to output 1080i, and the Samsung accepts this, then the Samsung is downsampling/downconverting (not sure of the proper term) the signal to its native resolution.

Isn't that for the VGA input? I emailed Samsung about this because when you feed it a 1080i signal its displays 1920x1080i and a 720p signal is 1280x720 resolution if you hit the info button on the remote. Samsung tech told me that it displays the full 1080i signal.
