Problems with my Home Theater Set-Up

I have the Sony HT6900DP HTIB and lately I've been hearing like a popping or crackling sound coming from the speakers whenever something loud happens. It also sounds like the speakers have way too much "air" sound in them. I checked all the polarities of the speaker wires and everything was good. I have 16 or 18 guage speaker wire and in order to get it in the receivers holes I have to shred a lot of it. Anybody know what it could be? I plan on getting a new receiver with HDMI anyway, should I just go get a new HTIB?

*Update*

I tried the PS2 (Analog hookup) and DVD Player (Coax) and I couldn't really hear the sound. So, it must be something with the Optical hookups right? The doors on them did break off, could that be a problem?

I wouldnt get another HTIB seperates are only a little more expensive and if one part breaks you dont have to throw the whole thing out. Try 22 gauge wire i know its waaaay thin and most wouldnt but small sat speakers really only take that. And i good way to check an optical out is if there is a red light in it.
