First up it's hard to compare a system that has been out a year and one that has been out a day. I'm pretty openminded about game systems as I started back in the day with the Atari 2600, 5200, Nintendo, Sega, 3DO, PS1,2,3 and both Xbox and the 360. I'm sure I missed something, but my point being is I just like good games regardless of brand.
My quick first impression is the 360 has the advantage currently, but it's more for the system itself than graphics. If you just moved to the next gen from a PS2 or a XBOX then the PS3 is great. However if you have a 360 you will be more critical. It's really the simple things that make it seem more user friendly. If you have both you will know what I mean. I think the biggest difference is the Blu-ray versus HD-DVD players. In this category the HD-DVD player seems to be better and it is enough of a difference that my wife even noticed. Yep my wife who is not that observant about these things noticed the difference. I'm hoping down the line this will change, but today on my TV the HD-DVD looks and sounds better. I have my TV cal'd the same for both devices too.
To sum it up, right now the PS3 to me is just another system. I think in March when Motorstorm and F1 come out I will finally see what this thing can do. Right now it's in second place in my house. I think Sony has more of a challenge ahead than they think. All the talk and hype about how much better it was than the 360 is not there currently and it may hurt them. I think they really needed 3-4 good games to show what the system could do. Most of the titles that were launched were ported from the 360 and I think that hurts their system as the 360 is more polished right now. The good news is we know it can do more AND the next gen finally has competition which is good for everyone. Look for better games in March when some really good titles show up. For now I'll just enjoy and learn more about my PS3 as the waiting game begins again.
Two things I'd like to pass along. NHL 2K7 is a great game on the PS3 and you should check it out. Also 7.1 output is only available thru the HDMI connection and that sucks !! All my audio is done thru optical outputs. That really bites as that was a selling point for me.
Thanks Mike

Nice review.
I think the real problem with the PS3 is that its a year late and doesn't offer anything more than the 360.
Graphics ARE going to be very equal between the two. So the only way either one can stand out are with all the extras. 360 does that, PS3 doesn't.

OP - have you tried out the online system? How does it compare to XBL?

Unfortunately I live in the country and I had to go with satellite internet service. The service is fast enough from what I understand, but it has latency issues when playing. Because of that I have not tried either system online, however I have decided to go ahead and get a router and hook up both systems for updates. You can do all of that stuff without any problems. I wish I had DSL or cable out here:(

My coworker who got his hands on PS3 says he loves XBL way more than the online system for PS3.
As we all know, and as he said, since it is free, there are shortcuts taken.
One main thing he said was integration, where when playing a game you have to sign out to even see who is online let alone invite someone, I need to ask him in full what he really meant as I personally have no experience with a PS3, but he said that he'd rather pay 50 bucks a year for XBL than use the free system or PS3.
Luckily this is software based and will be changed for the hope of Sony.

OK, so after reading a bunch of reviews, it sounds like this (overall)...
--PS3 graphics are or will be very equal
--The minor details in using the system are an advantage for the 360. Where the PS3 still has some work to do in order to make the system more user-friendly.
--The online system is more user-friendly on the 360 but the PS3 may improve in the future.
--Playstation Network is FREE.
--Assuming you use the high definition and play online, the Playstation is cheaper. PS3=$600system + $0high definition add on + 0 online fees.
Where the 360=$400 + $200 high def add-on + $?monthly access fee means the 360 is more expensive.
I am by no means a "Fanboy" of either system. But I'm relying on PS3 to improve their system in the next couple years. If they do that I believe the PS3 will be as or near user-friendly as the 360 AND it will be cheaper.
I would LOVE to see more copmarison reviews only from those people that own both 360 and PS3. :yippee:

Ok, now let's assume we don't want to watch HD movies. PS3=$600, where the 360 is $300 (core) or $400 (premium) + $50yr for Xboxlive gold (silver is free). Plus you can't even compare Sony's online service being even close to Xboxlive. I would gladly pay 5 bucks a month for all the features it has. It is clear which is more expensive and which is the 'real deal'.;):yippee:

cmon stop the whole bullshit price comparison withthe PS3 and 360. I just hate reading it's simply PS3 buyers trying to justify paying 600$ for a system. The fact is you can get a premium system for way less then 400 especially with the rebate and offfers. PS3 at this point can't be compared to the 360 yet, give it till years end when some bugs are worked and then start the comparing frenzy.:)

Years end? A little optimistic, aren't you? :)
The problem Sony faces is that the didn't really do anything knew. They copied everything they did and in regards to the online, it seems they just re-used what they had for PS2.
Microsoft is constantly adding new things to the 360. So even if Sony does the same, Microsoft will always be a step ahead.
There are only 2 benefits I see to owning a PS3.
1) Cheap Bluray player
2) You get to play PS3 exclusives
Other than that, what reason is there? I really hope Sony sits at the bottom of the list in sales when they start preparing for the PS4. Maybe if that happens, they'll actually be a bit more innovative instead of copying what others have already done.

XBL is a force to be reckoned with. When you look at the last gen systems and examine how each company treated their online systems, it's easy to see that Microsoft "got it" while Sony did not. When the 360 came out, they didn't just port over the same setup they had in place - they revamped it and made it new again.
They've set the bar pretty high for online integration and from what I've read so far, Sony has a long way to go if they want to stay competitive.
As for Sony's online system being free, I'm afraid the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies. Less than $5/month is worth it to have a quality system in place.

How much money do you guys want to wager that the PS4 will probably come with an adaptation of the Nintendo Nunchuku thingy? Sony has done exactly nothing other than copy, and I don't expect them to change from that path. It's easy when you let someone else do the market research, and design for you.

Yeah, I think its way to early to consider that. First we'd have to see how well it does. Its certainly something I think they could do.
Who says they have to wait for PS4 either?

I don't need to justify it. I bought it because I like it. I have yet to have a single "bug" occur on mine.
