Hi guys!! I just bought a Hitachi 51f59 HDTV rear projection TV and been playing with it for the last 2 hours. I have it connected to my Dish Network box via S-Video. My box is like 3 years old and is not HD. My picture quality is very standard looking. It has very bad jaggies and is not very clear. It looked way better on my standard 43" Hitachi rear projection. I am not new to home theater but new to HDTV. I was wondering if I upgraded to the HD box the DN has, even if I don't subscribe to the HD packages, will my picture quality improve by going from S-Video to HDMI? I have adjusted everything and even manual adjusted convergence. Just curious if it's my crappy box or the TV. I know that HD channels will look great but what about channels not in HD? Thanks.

It is probably the tv. Most HDTV's are made for HD and the sd connections suffer. If you do not want to have HD programing, get an 811, 921 or 942. They will give you the HD connections and won't have the HD access fee you get charged for by not ordering an HD metalic package. If you have OTA at your house, you can hook that up and get a taste of what HD actually looks like.

I bought a Hitachi 57F59 last Saturday, and I am VERY impressed with the PQ of the SD chanels on it through my ViP622.
Although obviously not as good as the HD picture, it looks very good on certain SD channels, especially History Channel and Discovery Channel.
Which E* receiver do you have?
Have you tried another S-video cable?

No I have not. My cable box does not have a model number on it. I have had it since NOV 02. Under system info it gives me DP508, software P363. It only has S-Video. I went to best buy and looked at my TV again and the picture is up there with some of the LCD and Plasmas. So I asked around the TV section and they said it will increase with the HD box and using component instead of S-Video. They said the S-video is killing my picture and the fact that my viewing distance is only 7-9 ft. I hope I can get the true picture to come out.....

I have the 57F59 and Verizon FIOS, and quality is excellent, much better than the old Comcast cable. MY STB has HDMI output, so I use that. See what your vendor has for a new STB with HD and HDMI; you won't believe what you are missing.
