I currently have a 37" LG LCD HD mounted on the wall above a 34" CRT Toshiba HD. I want to replace the CRT TV with a 42" HD (either Plasma or LCD). I am just looking for thoughts or opinions on having a mix LCD and Plasma right next to each other. Will I always be comparing the two? I don't think so, but that is what I have done with the LCD / CRT tv's... Currently I am leaning towards not mixing the types and going with a 42" LCD Samsung, or Vizio.. maybe Panny.. any comments or thoughts would be appreciated...

I think LCD and Plasmas are both amazing products of modern technology.
So many of the original bugs for both of the technologies, have been improved greatly, if not completely eliminated, that often when you hear somebody talking about the negatives points of either, their opinion is based on outdated info.
For me personally though, I often watch my TV in a moderatly lit room, where glare is a HUGE factor, and that is the one aspect that makes an LCD a much better choice for me. However, if you usually watch your TV in a darker room, where glare is not a problem, plasma might be fine for you.
Glare factor aside, most of the plasma sets I have seen (even the higher end models) are almost "too sharp" to the point of edginess...... However, I'm almost sure this could be corrected (to suit my own eyes) by simply adjusting down on the sharpness setting.
Peace,

I would have expected the small LCD to be crisp and sharper than the Plasma but it's not. HD comes close on the LCD, but SD is considerably better on the Plasma.
The only time i prefer the LCD is when i'm watching TV on a sunny afternoon with the blinds wide open and the room is bathed in sunlight, otherwise i much prefer to watch the Plasma. I find myself comparing them all the time. I keep toying with the idea of replacing my Plasma with a larger 46" LCD but i have yet to find one that displays as well as the Plasmas.
The LCD is in front of my desk so i can watch it while i'm working on the computer in the corner of my living room. If i look 45 degrees to the right i can watch the plasma, which is directly across from my recliner.
I think if you mount a good 42" Plasma near your LG LCD you'll suddenly not be as happy with the LCD as you were before.

If you are looking for a nice LCD to replace that plasma, you may want to check into the Samsung LN-S5296D. At 1080p in and out, 8ms response, 6000:1 dynamic contrast and 1080p through component, it rivals some of the best plasmas out there. On the other hand, it can be had for around 4 grand..maybe even cheaper.

Plasma is on the way out according to a friend of mine who is an Elec. Eng. at Sony. Plasma has many shortcomings, the main one being burnout with the newer video games. This is why Sony got out of plasmas to concentrate on LCD. Plasma = Beta, Edsel, Yugo

Don't believe all your buddy says. As you look on this forum you will see that for pure best picture quality - most here prefer PDP. If PDP is going away - there sure are some real hefty $$ that have been poured into new PDP panel plants over the last year.
IMHO - Sony does not do plasmas because Sony does not have a plasma panel plant. Actually - to my knowledge - Sony may not make any of their sets completely. I know Samsung is the main source for most if not all of the LCD flat panels that Sony puts out there.
I have Sony dealers that buy PDP sets from me as they get calls for PDP and need a source.

Plasmas don't "burn out", they're rated at 60,000 hours where typical tube TVs (including Sonys) are rated at 30,000 hours.
Sony got out of the Plasma market because they were making obscenely overpriced plasmas with substandard picture quality and were sourcing their plasma panels from Samsung and slapping the Sony name on it, and were getting killed by the competition. Very embarassing for Sony. Also, they were in financial trouble and enacted cost cutting measures and layoffs and decided to concentrate on LCD which they were already pretty good at, and drop their flop of a Plasma program altogether.

OWNED!!!!
Oh btw SONY is also quiting the desktop display business due to poor sales and stiff price competition.
