Reciever replacement?

I have an older echostar reciever that is built into a JVC digital VHS deck. There were not too many of these units made....back in the 90's. I'm having issues with the sat tuner portion of this sweet deck. This is my 2nd tv setup....its a SD tv.

So I call DN and ask for some help with certian channels not working. (intermitent blocking of certian channels) The tech tells me it's probably because of the outdated hardware and and software for this old unit, even though he verified that it was up to date on software version.

He tells me if I would like...he can send a installer out to replace my once $1,000 digital VHS deck out for a "IRR 501" ???? I looked on the net for this reciever and even on Ebay.....all that came up was a remote control. Is the unit he was talking about really a 5001 PVR unit? I think this was one of the first PVR SD units?

I really do not want to give them this JVC deck because it is so useful as a Digital VHS deck for other uses. I would love to give him anyone of my other old SD recievers that I have...(3 of them).

I also have an extra 811 that is not in use. Maybe I should just use this 811 reciever on my 2nd SD tv...and use the JVC unit as a stand alone VHS deck. ?

Thanks for any input.

Well, the JVC has been paid for (many times over by now). Might as well keep it for your extraneous uses.
I traded in a 510 DVR (single tuner) along with an 811 when I got my 622. The 510 worked just fine, never had issues with it.
For your SD usage, I think going 'older' in this case is more useful than the 811.

i have the jvc/vcr/SVHS unit as well. mine broke about 6 months ago. i had the extra "monthly. insurance fee" and they sent me a replacment. As i remember u will not be able to use the jvc (the vcr function to play vhs tapes) if its not hooked up and has an active subscription.

i know how u feel as it was a very costly receiver. but you are way ahead to scrap it and get yourself a 622.

but if you really are in love with outdated equipment i would keep talking to dish to see if they can't work out a deal to get you a new one as they still have them (or had them) as of 6 months ago. or i can sell u mine as it just came out of the box(almost). but you will be much happier with a 622. in short a 622 will change your life.

ps you might also get rid of your 8 tracks :) :D

before u do anything disconnect the sat line and see if it will play tapes. my guess is it won't

later... hope this helps

Of course, a 622 would be a one box solution that works well for most of us. But a 510 (or..) DVR would be more useful for the 2nd TV as a standalone receiver than an 811.
