DVI to HDMI issues on Comcast box

Hi there,

Less than two weeks ago I got a DVI to HDMI cable from ehdmi.com so that I could get a better picture quality out of my comcast HD cable box than I could from component. I could definitly see the difference. It is plugged into the back of my 42" Samsung DLP in HDMI port 1. Today when I switched to that source to watch cable, the picture kept randomly switching between static and a clear picture. The sound stayed consistenly fine through all of this. When I tried through the component I did not have this problem, nor did I have this problem with the cable connection. The DVI to HDMI connection is the only one with this weird static problem.

What could be a possible cause of this? What can I do to fix it? Could a cheap cable go bad that fast?

Thanks for any and all help.

I just recently had the exact same experiance with my Comcast box and a Samsung 30" HD tube tv.

I went out and bought another cable to test and the results are the same (screen switches from static to picture very rapidly).

I also made a service call to Comcast and they switched boxes to see if that was the problem. No difference. Up untill a couple weeks ago the HDMI image was perfect.

If anyone has some suggestions I would really apprecaite it.

I have got a new cable, too. Is this just Samsung TVs? This was working up to a few weeks ago with me too. Is anybody else having this problem? I am so pissed right now. I spent all this money for an HDTV and I can't even get a true HD signal because of something to do with Comcast. A tech will be coming out for the THIRD TIME tomorrow. It's freakin' ridiculous. Comcast is shit.

Could this be a bandwidth problem? Somebody PLEASE HELP.

Similar problem described here:

The DVI or HDMI output works intermittently or not at all

Description: The DVI/HDMI connection can briefly show a picture, then revert to "high definition static" for about 3 seconds, and then repeat the sequence indefinitely. The connection also may not work at all.
Cause: Firmware may have been upgraded to version 16.20 (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Firmware_and_Software#Version_16.20). Check your firmware version (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Firmware_and_Software#How_To_Check_Your_Firmware_a nd_Software_Versions_.28i-Guide.29).
Remedies: Use the component video connection as a workaround. A firmware upgrade will be required to resolve the issue. If using an HDMI to DVI converter, you may need to enter the HDMI advanced settings, and change the color space to RGB in HDMI mode or set it directly to DVI mode.http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Bugs

I have exactly the same issue after upgrade by Comcast. There is supposed to be a fix to the problem sometime in January. I am using component and see no difference in picture quality. Have Samsung 4272 42" HD Plasma.

Just use component until they get it fixed. It is a "true HD signal". For most people there is no difference in picture quality between component and HDMI. In fact sometimes HDMI is worse.

A word of friendly advice: dump those incompetent thieves whoever your cable provider is and get Directv. Unless, of course, you enjoy perpetual rate increases, rude customer service, and lousy reception. How many times do I have to beat on this subject? I've had Directv for 12 years. Outstanding in all areas: reliable excellent reception, great customer service. Top notch value for the money.
