DTV receiver for OTA only

I am looking for a receiver to get off air HD channels on my TV, the receivers I have seen are a little expensive and I was wondering if I could buy a used direct tv HD receiver on ebay and use it to get my local off air channels without activating with direct tv? I do not have direct tv service or equipment, I am a Dish network subscriber.

It would seem that a subscription is necessary to get the OTA to work on this receiver. Unless someone knows how to get around this? DN will provide you with an HD unit. It is a piece od s**t though.
