Since I'm a newbie here and to the whole HDTV thing, I was hoping for a little guidance on obtaining the best PQ I can with Dish Network !!?? I'm not concerned with the HD channels yet, just trying to clean up the SD PQ. I currently only have the Dish DVR 522 (renting) and was wondering if upgrading the receiver will help PQ ?? My system is as follows :

Dish Network DVR 522 (S-Video only)
Samsung HL-R5078W (HDMI)
Samsung DVD-R145 up conversion (HDMI)
Onkyo TX-SR703
Outside HD antenna for locals (look great)

The locals on Dish look pretty bad and HD locals thru Dish are not available, also the other SD channels don't look the greatest either. I like using the DVR and been looking at the 942, but all the talk of the MPEG-4 should I hold off even if I'm not looking for the HD locals ??

If you are using the 522 and connecting it through S-Video then that is as clean a PQ as you are going to get. I would recommend you get the vip622 DVR as it can record both DISH HD and OTA HD. It is a spectacular unit. Yes DISH locals suck, they dont devote a whole lot of bandwidth to them. I live here in St. Louis and there are no HD locals on DISH either. The vip211 and vip622 have built in ATSC tuners and as I said before you can record the OTA stuff as well. When it finds your OTA channels, it integrates them into your program guide. As far as mpeg4, the only receivers that DISH will give you is the vip211 or the 622. Both of them are mpeg4 receivers so your future is pretty good with those peices of equipment.

Dish will not active the HD channels on the 942 anymore, you will need the 622 - the only HD DVR made.

Ok .... Thanks for the input !!! I just wanted to make sure I have things the way they should be and if upgrading would even help. One question on the vip622 ... does it save all the OTA stations ... problem is I can pull in several different area HD signals, but the TV has to re-search for channels everytime I move the antenna ??

Yes, you can hook up your antenna to the 622. The 622 has an integrated ATSC tuner. Then scan for digtial stations. The 622 will put them in the guide and you can record HD OTA.
