Switch here & a switch there!

 Hello! Please excuse my new behaviour, by asking such questions, but I don't know yet. I will be better after awhile. I have a couple'a Q's; !st; Is it necessary that the dish company made my daughter get a "updated switch" for $65? We are sharing her 1 house w/4 boxes. One is in mine house. So one day, they(dish co) wanted her to call in & turn all TV's & boxes, so they could check to see if she really was using all TV's at her house. I went & hooked 'em all up, after buying the $65 switch, that allowed all 4 TV's to work w/different boxes. Then, while they were on the phone, checking everything out on the boxes, they said satellite 110 wasn't working. That she had to old type switch & has to replace it w/another more modern one, for another $50! But she does get all channels w/just 119 sat! Can they make her get that other switch? Second Q; is, I have known for awhile, that I had to have 2 500's dishes to get all channels when I hook up to HDTV? So I've been on the look out for another dish. Well, I just found one, but it is like my daughters. The old type, that would require that switch to get satellite 110. But my other dish, the one I am using now, is the new type, & can get 119 & 110, like I am suppose to. So I was wondering if I even had to have any switch for getting the HD signal when I hook up? I think I was suppose to have :: Ron.

Right or wrong, what happened, did! At least, while scolding me, you could have answered the questions I was concerned about! As the question was about having to have 2 dishes to receive HD signals from Dish Network. I haven't kept up, as I should have, but other problems came up, & I couldn't. What I would like to know is; do I still have to have 2 dishes to get the "voom"", I think it was, from Dish Network? Or do they still have that for HDTV? I have 1 dish on now. But have the other one if needed. Does it have to have the switches also? The ones that are on it for 119 & 110 Sat? Or does the second dish run w/o those switches all together? If anybody else has any answers, feel free to answer! Thank you for your time....Ron..

Basically you need a dish for 110, 119, and 129 OR 61.5 to get full programming including HDTV.

A Dish 1000 will get the first 3. But depending on your reception area, you might be better with the Dish 500 for 110 and 119 and a separate dish 500 for 61.5

With the separate dish, a twin LNBF will be used to tap off an extra output if you plan to use a DVR (like the 942 or 622). I would advise going with the 211 or 622 DVR to get ALL the latest channels including mpeg4 channels you will not get with older receivers.
You will need a special switch to hook up the Dish 1000 for a DVR.

That's the basics. I would strongly advise you to go to a local installer for more details. For one thing, they will know which setup will work best in your geo. area.

From there, good luck on re-activating your receivers. I would certainly try to downsize. With a 622 you could wire up more than 2 TVs, and do it all with only one receiver/DVR.

Between Dish and your installer, you should be able to work out the problem. You want to resolve it quickly or Dish might penalize you by holding back on making any deals. They tend to get cranky when they have trouble locating their receivers.

Basically, I would want to get as much turned in back in to Dish and the installer and start off fresh. Likely your Dish hardware (LNBs, switches, etc.) may be legacy, and not Dish Pro.

Daleb; thanks for your help! I guess Radio Shack sold my daughter the wrong switch. At Dish's request to buy that switch. It was supposed to connect all 4 TVs;per a line from that switch from the dish, to all TVs! Come to find out, she does not get 110, & now, dish says she has to have another switch-SW-44.. Which will pull in sat 110, & allow hook up of all TVs! Man, what a hassle! Anyway, I asked the Dish people what I had to have in order to get all the HD I can, & now, after telling me a few months ago, that all I needed was 2 500's, so I happened upon another 55, making 2 now. The one I am using & the one I found. But, they are saying I need the 1000 now! And not 2 500's! Boy oh boy, will it never end? The 622-DVR, does it have a HDTV to or from it, I wonder? I am in the process of buying a good, but inexpensive HTIB, I think. I am looking at a few different ones, but all will have HDMI- up scaling. So I think I will be okay there. Thank you for the info..Ron...

I would stick with a local installer, Ron. Really, sometimes Dish will give you all the right info, sometimes not. They 'automatically' give folks Dish 1000 when they go for HD service. You still have options. Unless your local installer agrees the 1000 is best for your location because 61.5 is a crapshoot.

Daleb; Thanks for the info. ya know, you'd think it'd be a 'lil easier than all this. I really haven't looked into all the possibilities yet, as I'm not ready yet to go HDTV! I still haven't even bought one yet. But by the time I am ready, I'm sure, well, maybe not, sure they'll have a better idea of what I will need. And not just one thing & then another. I am not sure what is the preferred dish or satellite needed in my area, but I am in Ventura California, about 60 mi north of L.A! So who knows what satellite I would need for all channels? I can find out from people that already have what's needed at this location. :hithere: I think there is a site that I can go to to find what's the best in my town. Buttttt- Thanks for your time.
