New VIP211 Hookup question

I just had the 211 installed today and can't quite figure out the audio hookup correctly. I hooked up the 211 to my plasma set with HDMI. I am not going to use TV internal speakers, just my speakers connected to my audio receiver. I don't have hdmi input on my receiver and would still like DD5.1 sound when available. Why can't I get any sound when I hook up a fiber optic cable from the 211 and send it to out to the receiver. Does the HDMI cable dominate the audio and "X" out the possibility of using the fiber optic audio out option?

Did you select an External Decoder from the setup menu. Go to menu and select System Setup and than Dolby Digital and pick one. I use Dolby Digital/PCM and Line Mode. Hope this helps.

I posted a similar question. Go down a few threads to "VIP211 and Dolby digital" dated 5/4/06. Hope this helps.

Mine is working fine and am getting DD5.1 when it is being broadcast.

My problem is not that I can't receive DD5.1 from the OTA antenna, rather I can't get DD5.1 from my satelite HD channels. I have HDMI ran from the 211 to the tv and a fiber optic cable from the audio out on the 211 to the digital input on the receiver. No sound?

This setup work for me.

Few things to check:
* is opt cable plugged into dish receiver ALL the way? Mine takes some force to get past the snap lock.
* looking at other end of the cable, do you see the red light from the LED on the dish receiver? You should.
* Is the opt cable plugged into the correct port on the audio receiver?
* Is the cable plugged in ALL the way.
* Are you selecting the correct input?
* Is the selected input set up for dolby digital?

If all is OK, I don't have an answer.

Make sure in the menu that you selected Dolby Digital/PCM. Another problem is you need to tell your receiver to use the optical input. My receiver needs to be told what digital input to use.

What model and model # A/V receiver do you have?

I don't know if I can provide any more useful information than what's been suggested, but with more detailed information... someone else might.

I have a Denon 4800 AVR. My detailed info has already been listed. My connections are as follows. HDMI from the 211 to the plasma. Fiber optic from the 211 to the (4800) receiver. I labled the input in the receiver as SAT. Everything should work. I get no sound at all. Does the HDMI cancel out the fiber optic audio connection when it's used?

Hello,

Actually, the HDMI does not cancel out the optical signal. I am using both connections as well. I understand you have labeled the input on your Denon as Sat....this may seem an obvious question, however, are you sure that your Denon is on Sat when watching tv? Also, on my unit (Yamaha DSP A1) - there is an option to receive only analogue, or only DD, or only DTS, for each input....for instance, if I accidentally have it set to receive only DTS, I will not hear a DD only signal.

A test may be to hook up the same optical cable from your dvd player, to your Denon...go through the proper set up procedures and see if you get sound that way. -

Please post your results....would like to hear your resolution.

I have a very similar setup with my VIP211. I use an HDMI cable from the 211 to the Samsung DLP for the video. All my audio comes from my receiver not the TV. An optical cable runs from the 211 to my Yamaha receiver input labeled "DTV/Cbl". I have another optical cable going from my DVD player to a second optical input on my reciever labeled "DVD". Do not have any problem with sound from either source and get DD5.1 if its broadcasted.

Sounds like your hookup is correct. Maybe there is a problem with your opitical cable or the optical connections on either your 211 or reciever ??
