I found an open box 27" Samsung Slimfit for $200 off the regular price. The picture clearly did not look as good as the LCD's but it has the ATSC and NTSC tuners built.

Can this TV be adjusted to give accurate color/resolution? I have read all the problems people were having with this TV but in the store I didn't see those problems just an average picture but exceptional price.

Buy or wait?

for $200 that is a steal!!!..then again you get what you pay for plus its open box, im assuming that means its one of the display models for sale?.

It is a return unit and the price is $200 off the regular sale price. Attractive price but I have read about a lot of problems with this model and it clearly did not look as good as the LCD's.

I recently tried two of these from Best Buy. They both suffered from bad screen "bending". The second one far worse than the first. The salesman at the store told me they were told buy samsung that 1 in 8 of these had this problem. A known problem that is hard to fix. It has to do with trying to fit what should bee a widescreen format (what most HD signals are) into a normal set. Others had returned them for the same reason. I would plug it in at the store and look very closely a the sides and bottom of the screen with a picture that includes what shoud be straight lines in it. There is a chance someone returned this one for just that reason. On the second one I tried the problem was so bad that when you would watch a channel with a scrolling ticker on the bottom (like CNN or ESPN) it was like watching a roller coaster! I ended up getting the Toshiba 26HF85 for the same price. No built in tuner, but no problems either! The Toshiba does a much better job with non-hdtv signals also.

Consumer report rates the Samsung 30" Slimfit TX-R3079WH pretty poorly for picture quality in March 2006 issue. Neat concept with the thinner profile though.

I almost bought this TV...luckily i read internet reviews, and discovered it has a VERY common screen bowing problem. I looked at 2 at CC and they both had it. There are a bunch of open box deals on the TV at the BEst buys, circuit cities, etc in Columbus...which is never a good sign.

the odd thing is all those reviews are saying nothing about any geometry or bowing problems

For HDTVs, the "customer reviews" on the websites like amazon.com, Circuit City, etc, are almost always total garbage. They are okay to read but mostly they are from buyers who know absolutely nothing about video quality and what to look for.

I was initially tricked into buying the Toshiba 30HF85 months ago by reading those same reviews, which said it was a great HDTV with no problems. But once I came to these forums I found out it's possibly the worst set with the most problems.

Old saying-"You can't tell a book by it's cover." I read a lot of forums and threads on Samsung "slimfit" tvs and got one-can you say "geometry problems?" Back it went, got a lesser brand that everyone says is garbage-I like it, beautiful picture.

Yeah I think some of the lesser brands are good too. Also, if you pay less then it is acceptable to get a TV of slightly less quality also. The Samsungs are priced the highest of all the mass-marketed CRT HDTVs. They do have some good qualities though, geometry isn't everything. But I'm not sure they are worth their higher price tag.

Well-all I've gotta say is that if you want a crt hdtv you'd better hurry and get one because at this rate all of them are going to be gone before the end of the year.
