I have a Sony KV-30HS420 and am about to buy a DVD Player. Would an upconversion player make sense or is this TV's upconversion good enough and I should go with a regular progressive-scan player? I'm not sure if the TV converts the DVD signal to 960i or 1080i, and if there would be a noticeable difference between the two.
Thanks,
Steffen
The HS420 is a CRT, so an upconverting DVD player won't do you any good. Your TV already upscales a 480p image to the TV's native res. Buying a upconverting DVD player would be redundant. Some people might argue this, but I don't buy it. I can't see a difference between 480p being upconverted once vs twice, and I'm wearing my glasses

DVDs are actually 480i but I agree, not worth getting an upconverting player for a CRT HDTV.

Many CRTs display a 480p signal as 480p (or 540p). A progressive scan player with decent component cables will look great.

Yea I agree,on my DLP it seems to be a bit of an improvement but on my 30"CRT I see none.I bought it for the CRT mainly for the DIVX playback feature but the upconverting is useless,on my set atleast,in my opinion as well.So if DIVX playback is not a concern of yours a good progressive scan player will be the best it will get.Probably regular p.scan players that have DIVX and other format playback capability,I'm just not sure.

I can only speak from my own experience, but I think that DVD upconversion on a CRT can produce better picture definition than a standard progressive scan player. I have a Sony 30XS955 and an Oppo upconversion player and I am thoroughly impressed with the performance of both. Granted, I've spent many hours properly calibrating the tv in the service menu so the picture quality SHOULD look amazing. Nevertheless, I've experimented with several standard 480p dvd players & none of them compare to the quality produced by the Oppo player. The Oppo's de-interlacing far exceeds the capabilities of any tv's internal de-interlacer. Take it with a grain of salt, but I feel that with the right player and a properly calibrated tv set, upconversion players are major improvement.
